'05 SXT Brake Noise...

I have an '05 sxt and have been getting a squeak, well it's more like a metallic screaching sound, out of my brakes since day 1. I can't tell if it's coming from the front or the rear though. It seems like the more I drive the car the worse the noise gets. The dealership said that all neons make this noise but I've never heard it before. I replaced the front pads (ceramic pads now) & rotors at 20k (40k on the car now) and it didn't help any. Tried lubricating the calipers and pads also, no luck though. Anyone have the same problem or know of a way that I can solve this?

neon brakes squeak...especially when wet.

My brakes seem to do the exact opposite though. They make a lot of noise when they are dry and are quiet when wet. If I heard this noise coming from someone else's car I would probably tell them to get their brakes checked if not replaced. It's gotten to the point where I don't want do drive the car anymore...it looks nice but it sounds horrible.

you didn't mention wheither you changed or checked your back drums/pads whichever you have. What are they doing?

If it were me id look into wheel bearings. It will sound somthing like a bad brake pad sometimes. And it will get worse as you drive it more. I replaced brakes, and rotors on my car when my wheel bearing went bad. It didn't help until I changed the bearings. Good luck!

Shouldnt be wheel bearings on a low mileage '05... never know though. I don't know what the dealer is talking about as far as "all neons" making that noise. The brakes on my 1st Gen don't make a peep... Maybe its another fault on the 2nd Gens?

(Hoodoo will be posting any time now, all flaming mad because I'm pointing out another 2nd Gen flaw. :D )

I have had the rear brakes checked by a local shop. They cleaned and adjusted them but said they still had a lot of miles left in them. If you let the car sit for a few hours and then drive it the sound goes away for a while. But after about 15-20 minutes it's back again.

Maybe it isnt even in the brakes! You may check into the bushings in your suspension and what not under there. They may cause a few squeeks. I remember one person here who had to change them and they also had low miles.

Without being there to actually hear the noise its hard to tell, the guys on here have offered you advice so it's not like anyone is ignoring you. Other than what has already been stated, :dunno: Your situation seems to not be a common problem and you've got yourself a unique situation. Like I said earlier, the only time my brakes squeal is when they are wet, drives me nuts because it sounds like metal on metal but as soon as I apply my brakes enough to dry them out...no sound.

I can't think of anything else that makes that very unique squeal like a worn pad on the rotor so, in not being there personally to hear your problem, my suggestion to you would be to try yet again, a different brand of brake pads and shoes and rotors. You said a local shop checked out your back brakes, did they look at the fronts as well?

Well, if it drives you completely nuts...here's a suggestion if you are desperate. Go to the auto yard and pull the drums, rotors, and brake pads (in good condition) off a trashed neon if you can get them for almost nothing or borrow from a buddy who owns a neon long enough to do a test drive on your neon. If the squeak doesn't go away, well you know its not that. If it does go away then you know. I'm inclined to think it's that based on the fact that some guys brakes dont squeal at all, some guys do squeal when it's wet, and some guys brakes squeal when its dry. If you are desperate - might be worth the effort.

I have changed the pads and rotors so I doubt it's them. Might have the wheel bearings checked out and the suspension bushings when I get a chance. It's hard to find the time though. I was thinking about redoing all four corners in about 9k. If I decide to go with new parts do you have any suggestions?

I have neon 05 and my rear brakes squeak, more until warmed up but even warm they squeak only different sound. if you want to make sure is it the fronts or the rears making noise try driving slowly and applying hand brakes only. If the noise is there then it's the rear brakes. Most likely it's the rear brakes and if you just clean and roughen up the shoes a bit, they will stop being noisy for a while. You can try to find the quieter shoes to install (like i did) but the noise will probably come back. This is the point i am at now...and i had someone suggesting to resurface or replace the drums (replace with premium so the material would be better....supposedly....i am thinking about it. let me know if you find a solution. Good Luck.

mine squeel...

I have a '99. Right now I'm having an issue with the front passenger since I need a new caliper/hose...

However the girl who owned the car before me said she always had that problem with a squeel especially after bad weather (hard rain or snow...) even when brakes were replaced.

Guy at her shop would just clean them for her and said they were getting dirty and whatnot. So maybe that's just it.

It drives me CRAZY too.I just turn the music up loud so I can't hear it.

Sometimes they make a little squeek when I'm off the brakes though too and my car is moving slow (like before I hit teh gass to move after a stop sign or something...) Maybe I should check the other stuff suggested there though...

I have been having a right rear (passenger side) brake squeak for some time. The squeak would pulsate under light brake pressure. I tried new shoes, drums, adjusters, and spring kits. Nothing worked. I replaced the wheel cylinder and the problem is gone! I had tried bleeding the old wheel cylinder and it also had no signs of leakage, so I thought, "how could it be bad?" I don't know exactly what was wrong with it, but it's quiet now. :D

i just had that same problem with my 99 and even after the cylinder change I had problems but I played with the rubber brake line that leads to it and it fixed it. I also found my squeeling was because the adjuster lock had fallen and was actually grinding on the inside of the drum.

haha man. it must be common cuz i basically have the same problem. the brakes are almost new but they randomly squeal sometimes. wet or not....i just turn the music up. lol
