DIY solid polyurethane engine mounts

i'm going to start from the stories end. just to express the importance of engine mounts, i have some picts to show.
recently i had lots of engine work done in two separate garages and both speed shops didnt notice failing mounts. the motor is only 325hp. so i think these mounts failed over time. 3 mounts got modifications and two of the old ones had failed. wish i would have done the motor swap myself!
these are the old ones

i didnt know i had problems till i had the mounts out. OK, the rubber is 17yrs old. a 96 1500. but a hp motor with failing mounts is no good. a lot of you ramers dont know it, these mounts fail often. anyone going to pop up the motor should at least do new mounts. cummins mounts fail more often and they have energy suspension supports available. nothing is listed for the gas engines. i found an amazing product!
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Energy-Suspe...47b7f3&vxp=mtr
i was told the cummins inserts may fit! but i wasnt going to spend the money just to try it.

this is how i went about it.
first i cleared a through path for the liquid. i used a 1/4 drill bit in a dremel. SMOKIN!
then i used a foaming cleaner for the old residue on the rubber. if a petroleum solvent is used the rubber will go gummy, then the poly wount adhere. the rubber must be solvent and dirt free, clean and dry! i used foaming lye oven cleaner and foaming glass cleaner to finish off. then just rinsed and dryed with a heat gun.

buy the liquid urethane. tape off the back sides of the mounts. buy a 50lb of sand. and get ready for the pour! the liquid comes just like a two part epoxy. the large can is the clear. the small quantity is the color and hardener. IMPORTANT! shake the small can for a good length of time. thoroughly mix the small can before adding it to the large clear liquid. the mix must be done consistently. pour slow.

after about a week to cure, i painted the mounts. i used flat 1200* bbq black rattle can. now not only does the new motor growl it rumbles too! i would have expected a real harsh feel. not too bad. tolerable! and i think the added material to the mount structures has really increased their strength. i should have no worries about these for some good time! for anyone doing motor swaps it is a good idea to check the old mounts. for those cummins or the poped up gassers please consider reinforcing the mounts for the power!
shake rattle and roll!

YA! i went a little rough neck with them. after the forward and back bushings went in they just look like a standard mount.
i think actually now not just the motor is held firmly, yet the frame and the cornering has changed a bit. the chassis seems stiffer!
whats a guy got to do for a little attention around here? tell me its a bad idea. tell me it looks like chit! or something. nobodies chatty around here no more!

That's one thing I'll be interested in seeing is how they hold up and how you like the solid mounts after a while.

i had that in mind also! so i tried an experiment. i wanted to test the bond and the bounce return from rigorous wear. had a little left from one of my pours. i poured some over the souls of my sneaker. right in the center. damn! without any cleaning the poly has stuck good for two weeks. the treads of my shoe feels harder almost uncomfortable stiff. the poly hasnt broken down or fallen off. and i walk miles a day in all kinds of conditions. just testing this stuff, i think i ruined an old $100 pair of sneakers. i'm confident the engine mounts are in there to stay. and i'm glad i did it!
ROCK & ROLL!

I know this thread is a little old but those cummin's poly mounts from energy suspension look like they would work...
I beat on my truck pretty hard and the motor mounts look like yours by the end of each year. Good thing for 2 year warranty at auto zone.
Have you pulled one of the mounts you made to see what it looks like now?

i havent had a chance to look over my work again. though my shoes went to the garbage with the poly still suck after 2 months and many miles. 99% sure the mounts are unscathed and not intimidated at all buy the motor!
when i had the motor built, i expected that sporty feel with a cam. the mounts really work well in the combination. i used the black 80 durameter poly. and i would be alright with solid alu or steel if i had the chance. after all its a tough truck and should ride accordingly.
at the speed shop, they had a few rams come in cause i was attracting them in with mine sitting around. one of the projects was a poly insert kit. shop said they had to grease the rubbers and use a vise to force the inserts from energy suspension together. 2nd hand information, "the customer was happy running his cummins that way!" the cummins was breaking mounts over and over again. we havent heard from him again, its been a year and a few months.
the shop then turned around and told me i didnt want solid mounts, and that i didnt need them. YA! look at what i found. there must be a reason i just dont listen to opinions!
jlake4130- my advise, do it, if you plan on keeping the truck..

You don't want solid mounts trust me. I made up a solid mount for my gf's car years ago until i could get a replacement. Horrible noise/vibration! And it was only a 4 cylinder.

if i had kept the old pistons from the previous motor- the 4" bore was just right. could clean off the skirts, make engine mount inserts of alu, and b done with it! i would be happy with solid mounts!
