Wagon 1 is down...

Well it's always something with these PW's ain't it? Water pump decided that it had endured enough torture over it's life. It started squealing really badly on my latest 700 mile jaunt. I could pop the hood with the engine idling and watch the fan moving back and forth as it spun. I dropped it off at the local dodge dealership to get the water pump worked on (I would do it but I just had shoulder/bicep surgery a week ago and won't be turning wrenches for a while). I'm also having them replace the front driveshaft u-joints as well while it's in the shop. They are starting to get squeaky. Nothing major and hopefully the next water pump will last another 75K.

I'm at 75k and thought I would replace mine just to be safe. But when I saw everything that was involved, I said no thanks.

From the 2006 Dodge DR Ram Truck Manual:

5.7L ENGINE
1. Disconnect negative battery cable.
2. Drain coolant.
3. Remove serpentine belt.
4. Remove fan clutch assembly.
5. Remove coolant fill bottle.
6. Disconnect washer bottle wiring and hose.
7. Remove fan shroud assembly.
8. Remove A/C compressor and generator brace.
9. Remove idler pulleys.
10. Remove belt tensioner assembly.
11. Remove upper and lower radiator hoses.
12. Remove heater hoses.
13. Remove water pump mounting bolts and remove pump.

Then reverse everything and put it back on.

Yeah right? I'm glad it's getting replaced. I thought it was an idler pulley or tensioner pulley on its way out so I pulled the belt off to spin each pulley by hand and they were all pretty smooth even though I have done quite a few high speed puddle runs which usually kill the idlers pretty quickly...I put my hand on the fan to rest it (bad shoulder) and the fan moved back about 1/2". I shook it back and forth a couple of times and that's how I deduced it was the pump. Go figure...the truck was running so good too! It's always something. I guess I'll call up and see if they can do an alignment too. Hasn't been aligned in the last 55K.

$499 for pump and labor...ouch. But it's better than neglecting it and overheating it later down the road.

Sorry to hear about your troubles. Speedy recovery to ya with your surger. I just replaced mine last year......it was nt actually that bad. The worst was having to heat the fan nut with a torch to get it loose. Other than that, piece of cake. The noise is what gave it away for me too

Thanks. Been doing passive shoulder exercises for about a week now. Going to start doing isometric stuff in another week or so and more stretching. I'm young hopefully I'll bounce back quick! I'm just glad it's fixed now and I don't have to worry about it for hopefully another 75K.

Bringinggg the thread back to the top. I think I know why my water pump failed. For about a year I have been topping off my coolant in the overflow tank with the Prestone 50/50 mix "mixes with all types & all colors" coolant. After some research I found out that that Prestone mix is an OAT coolant, and Mopar specifies an HOAT coolant...mixing the two can cause severe cooling system problems such as cavitation, pitting, erosion, sludge, etc.
Ford ran a test in which an engine/radiator designed for HOAT coolant was filled with OAT coolant and ran for 300 hours. The water pump and backing plate was severely damaged by cavitation corrosion. Now I wasn't running a straight 100% OAT fill, but I had been diluting the HOAT coolant fill for some time and I believe that was one of the leading factors to my failed water pump. I had the coolant flushed at Dodge @ the 30 & 60K mile marks. Truck currently has 75K on it and fresh HOAT coolant from when Dodge replaced the water pump. I'll probably flush it again @ 90K just to be safe and then again at 120K. And now I know that when I have to top off to use ONLY Zerex G-05 Coolant.

Save yourself the time, trouble and money in the long run and use the appropriate coolant. Wish I would have known the difference between OAT and HOAT coolants when I bough that Prestone stuff...lesson learned.

Here's a link to the Zerex that I'm talking about.
