Does anyone know how i can figure out how long the control arms need to be for a 10 inch coil lift with the arms in the stock location? i know for a 7 inch the upper is 18 3/4" and the lower is 20 3/16" but i can't figure out the length for a 10". and i know they make the drop pitman arm for up to a 6" lift, but what else can i do to correct the steering for a 10"? i haven't seen any pitman arms that big. thank you.
one more question... if or when i do decide to switch to a long arm kit which i know is a good idea for that height... how long are the 10" lift long arms?
I believe the rule of thumb is to lengthen the control arm by about 1/2" for every 1" up you want to go. How long are the stock arms, knowing that and the 5" lift arms you can easily figure it out.
When you get that tall you need to move back towards the rear of the truck at the same time to keep the arm level. Ten inch coil spring and just longer arms will cause the axle to ride like crap and go all over the road as the axle will move forward and back when the suspension travels. You can usually get 6" lift out of the factory control arm mounting location you can go more but not much before you start moving backward in geometry
with the 7" diesel springs that im ordering which equals 10" for my 1500, can i leave the upper location like you did? and just extend the hell out of the lower arm?
Remember what I said was for trucks that will be driven if it is a mud truck that gets trailer ed then short arms will work fine. I can say my ride got so much better after the short arms went to the long ones.
No after 6" or around there you need to relocate the upers also here are my brackets you might contact rock krawler and see it they will sell just the brackets but there long arms kit is for 8-12" so could buy the complete kit and be done also the 7" diesel springs only give me 8" on my v10 don't see getting 10" on a reg 1500
ya know elliott, im going to have to take your previous advice on this one. ya 10 inches would be cool for a mud truck, but also as my daily driver i'm going to have to pass. i think i will just stick with the regular 7 inch 1500 springs with stock control arm mounts for now and then eventually order the long arm kit and keep it at 7 inches. that will be plenty to flex with my 36's.
Why not just do a 5" and a body lift and the 36 or 37 " tires about the biggest you want to go on a 1500 with the axles anyway unless you up grade. I like the look of these truck with say like a 36 14.50 tire and 6-7 inches lift just keep doing what you are doing and learn from those of us that have made the mistakes with lifting as doing it once right is best. I still say save and do the keilderman air ride my next truck will have one in the long run it cost about the same and way cool.
can you send me pictures of your body lift? i had a 3 inch on my F-150 and the frame stuck down too much and it looked hideous. i heard the dodge frames are different but would you mind if i saw some pictures of yours? thanks bud.
Sorry to thread jack,
Im Curious now... I was thinking of Converting to 3/4 suspension on my 1500 with my 2.5" level i have now. But also with axles. Im really just looking for more strength then the 44f and 9.25r. But also be building close to a 4" lift at the same time. I know in the rear the 3/4 ton spring packs are wider so thats a given with that axle swap. So for the front should i just a 1500 coil lift and AAl's for a 2500 in the rear? Im not too worried about the ride so much thats no big worry. All this is the V10 setup BTW.
I would really like to know some peoples advice on this now its got me confused to seeing this as a bad idea.
Goal is the fit 35's eventualy but still have full travel and not interfere too much and as for gearing im looking at 4:10's front and rear with the Dynatrac hubs and lockers.
except for the rear leafs, everything bolts right up. if you're looking for a good ride and flex, i would go ahead and put the 5 inch 1500 skyjacker coils, but still use the V10 control arms. or you can get the 3 inch coils with a 1 or 2 inch spacer. either way you want to do it, i would go ahead with the 1500 springs for the ride and flex. sounds like a great idea bud. keep us posted!
Well as for the V10 Arms i wont be using stock... Looking into adjustable pieces such as the Skyjacker ones. I already have a HBS 2.5" level on it and that can be used either way. So then it would be better off with the 1500 coils? I plan on having a decently heay front bumper with winch too and thats part of why i was looking at 2500 springs. I dont want to go with the 1500 coils and have sagging issues when i get the bumper mounted up. In my head it all works Its kinda like building 2nd gen Power Wagon.
This is a new one to me about the 2 1/2" Leafs, After all the trucks ive been around have the 3" ones. Im not positive. But pretty sure i havent ever seen these. It would make it nice to not have to do that and just be able to use 1500 Lift leaf packs. I hate blocks to be honest and it scares me even having the stock blocks under my truck.
did you make that bracket and control arms yourself? that's a lot like what i have had in mind to make. are those arms adjustable for alignment and everything? i thought about just using my stock control arm brackets for now for my 7 inch lift. then when i have the time i will build a long arm kit.
No those are rock krawler (pure performance) topguncustomz sells em and they are adjustable heim joints. I will also tell ya once you go over 6" I don't think you will like the ride without long arms it will be allot rougher and what index kit you planning on using I hope you are not grinding the joint
i looked on topguncustomz and rock krawler websites and i couldnt find those brackets. and i noticed i also have to extend the drag link. ill probably just make one, but going 7 inches does it still need that curve around the pumpkin?
Drag link? Do you mean a drop pitman arm. Look for Pure performance on top gun same company as rock krawler. Index kit you have to index you transfer case to keep the driveshaft from hitting itself some grind the joint but I don't like anything that takes metal off the part
