Pennzoil Platinum/ Quaker State Synthetic

I don't know if anyone else has noticed, but lately it seems as if though this "synthetic" oil has been rather cheap with rebates of about 15.00 (6 qts) for the past couple of months.

Anyone have any idea as to why or if it's a good oil (Yes I realize a lot of us use Amsoil/Mobil-1). I find it kind of suspicious and well could it be a you get what you pay for?

PP is a great oil for the price. Usually advance auto parts puts out a sale buy one get one free. Synthetic oil for the price of a conventional oil--Save a little $$$ and use it other mods 'cause that is what we like to do....

Just be glad your not having to buy 12qts of the stuff. I run AMSOil in my Jeep (287ci) and it takes 7qts. I’ll pay more for it since it’s a great oil and I know the engine will last.

I hate both Pennzoil and Quaker State and wouldn't use it if they were giving it away. Mobil 1 only for me although Amsoil is good stuff too.

My dad's only blown up 2 engines in his entire career as a mechanic....one was on Quaker State, the other on Pennzoil. Steer clear of both!!!!

I personally run Mobil 1 oil/filter in both the vehicles. My grandfather got me on the stuff.... He was the president of a company that leased & leased to own all of the company vehicles. My grandfather purchased one of the company vehicles for my mother....Before he gave it to my mom, he had the dealership break part of the motor down & it exposed all cylinders & much to the delight of the dealership & mechanics.... there was no apparent damage to ANY of the cylinders or internal parts after 175,000. The dealership asked him what motor oil they had been putting in the car (Mobil 1). They also had the documentation since the dealership did all of their oil changes & maintenance. The dealership decided they were changing all of their vehicles over to Mobil 1 from that point. That was good enough for me.

Hmmm... Just finished rebuilding a Chevy 350 out of a '69 Camaro with well over 120k on it that had Pennzoil run through it it's entire life (and this car has been run hard it's entire life). The reason for the rebuild was that the orginial main seal was leaking and I figured it was time for it to be freshened up. My buddy that was helping with the tear down is a professional mechanic (for Dodge, ironically enough) and part way through it asked me if I was sure it had never been rebuilt (I am) and indicated that he believed that if I just replaced the seals and put it back together with the wear he saw he thought it would probably go another 120k. No gunk, excessive wear, etc.

I used to race bikes and blew up 2 FZR400 motors with Amsoil bike oil in them, both bearing failures and both were built by different builders...

So I could conclude from that I should only run Pennzoil and never run Amsoil...

(But I didn't conclude that...)

This just goes to show you.... everyone has testimonies of oil mfg's. It will come down to what everyone believes in. I know people that use all or have used all of the oil's described. Each swear by the oil they prefer. It'll come down to what you believe in.

Thanks everyone for the replies.

Edelbrock305, I kind of had a feeling I would get what people believe in and honestly I like Mobil 1 oil and filters. Good products and you can get free stuff from them.

Just thought it was funny how this oil would be so cheap. Would I ever use Pennzoil/Quaker State? Not quite sure, but I guess if Mobil 1 prices skyrocketed or if it was one of the few "synthetics" left I would.

I think the key thing is changing the oil, so as long as we do that on a regular basis we should all be fine.

DR06... My gut feel is your are right! People just need to change their oil. I was in another forum, some of those guys don't change their oil for 7K-8K miles. They believe this is fine. I just disagree but.... everyone has an opinion. I know people that use Wal-Mart oil & have had no problems ever. Then you get someone like my little brother....His first car at 16 was a little Ford that blew up because he never put oil in it. He actually told my dad & me when we asked him why he never checked the oil, his response was this.... I didn't think I had to because it came from factory w/ oil in it! If that isn't an idiot for you... I don't know what is!

Take care!
