Nice find WERM!
AS for the Afternarket, home made CAI. Yes its more for looks, unless you are replacing that 13" by 3 top hat.
I took the old hat off my durango, when I got the full K&N System put on, and put that hat onto my 93 DAKOTA, which had the enclosed tophat, along with a home made pipe and generic cone filter. Instant transformation. The Material makes the differance, Aluminum would work when wrapped in insulation. My 318 dak must have made 30 more horses, as the tire would spin too easy under same throttle input

im still torn between the 14x3 changeover or just a k and n filter for the stock box.

Indy says the 14x3 improved his 1/4 mile time pretty good, and fastman recommends them with his throttle body as well.

the argument rages on 14x3 more flow of hotter air
Cai less flow cooler air dunno

The reason for Colder air is that it's more dense with oxygen. More power requires more fuel and more oxygen. So if you are feeding a higher volume of oxygen, regardless of temporature, it means more power. I know that cooler air can have other effects on the motor such as possible helping if your engine is prone to detination a colder charge might help if you are on that hairy edge. But for the most part, Nitrous, CAI and such have to do with getting more oxygen into the cylinder.

I run a 14x3 KN filter and I really liked the difference when I switched from the OEM w/KN filter. I dont think I will ever go with a CAI, just stay with the traditional circle filter type.
