97 Dodge won't start

So, kind of a complicated question here, I'll do my best to make it easy to try and make what I am trying to ask clear. It's clear in my head, but whether I can get the words from my head to the screen is the challenge!

Stepson has a 97 1500 4x4. 360, auto trans. Ran good but burned oil bad. He replaced the engine with a 94 360 out of a van that had low mileage and also ran good. He kept all of the sensors original to the 97 as well as the wiring harness, distributor, and pcm from the 97. Put it all together and wouldn't run. Has good fuel pressure, and compression. He checked for spark, and there is no spark at the plugs. There is a spark at the coil, but just one spark. When he has his spark plug tester hooked up to the coil wire, and turns the engine over, it sparks once and that is it. If he turns the key off, and then turns the engine over again, same thing. One spark and no more. He has had it in to several local garages including the Dodge garage. They put the pcm from the 94 van into the truck and flashed it. Checked the coil and all of the sensors. They can't even get it running. They said they could eventually figure it out if he left it there for them to work on when they had time, but that would start to get expensive real fast. No codes are showing up, I assume since it won't start and run? He replaced the wiring harness from another 97 that was running and it made no difference. He found a wiring schematic and it shows an automatic shutoff under the hood. What exactly is this? Could this be bad? How would you check it?

This past weekend, he picked up a 2001 Ram 1500, 4x4 from a guy. The guy he got it from said it had been running, but missing on one cylinder. He trailered it home and tried to get it running. Wouldn't start, so in checking for spark, came up with the same issue as the 97. Spark one time at the coil and none at the plug?

If there is a problem with either the crank or cam sensor you won't get a spark. The auto shut down relay supplies 12+ to the coil and a few other things. Just put a meter on one terminal of the coil and see if you have voltage with the key on. You have to check it fast because if left on with out cranking the pcm will shut it off.

Automatic shutoff is a relay, also known as the ASD. If it's not working the truck won't even crank and fuel pump won't prime. Big question here though is: did he removed the crankshaft position sensor on the rear of the passenger side of the block prior to installing the new engine? That's the first place to start. If the crank sensor is undamaged (likely is) you want to verify fuel sync. Being as he kept the distributor from the 97 (shouldn't have touched it) you'll need to verify that it's not 180 out.

Also would like to add that you'll get balance issues once you get it running if the 94 flexplate wasn't swapped with the 97
