A 390 would probably be cheaper to build. Any recommendations on where to get one from? Id like it to be very reliable, plan on keeping the truck for a long time. Also where would I get a windage tray from?

i wasnt able to find a windage tray for the magnum stroker motor so im just going to use a standard tray and modify it to work on my 390

You just can't beat KRC for bang for the buck on a 390/408. Shumacker(sp) has the windage tray and I think they make them for the Mildon group. Very slight modification needed to the Mopar LA tray.

I cant seem to find a 360-390 stroker kit. I would assume I could just use the hughes 318-390 kit, or would i be wrong?

A 390 is a stroked 318.
As to the bolt patterns on the flexplate, they are the same for a 318 and 360. The flexplate bolt pattern at the converter changed in '96 when the went from 1 offset bolt to a squre pattern. This was done so the same converter could be used on a 318 and 360. Also the weight on a 360 converter was moved to the flexplate at this time.
Most aftermarket torque converters use the older 1 bolt offset pattern. This is especially true for non-lockup converters.

as a side note all mopar motors use the same 6 bolt pattern for the crank/flexplate or flywheel except the hemis/diesels not sure about the 02 and up motors

I actually have a line on a 360 LA block, talked to an engine builder and was told that magnum and LA blocks are the same what makes it a magnum is the heads, is this true? Are there any other differences?

there are other differences the oiling system is different between the 2 styles you can use the la style block but it will involve alot of work

motor mounts , oiling as said plus no crank sensor mounting on the block.....ive seen guys weld up a bracket to hold the crank sensor or simply use a duel sync dizzy.....1 signal for cam sensor and 1 for crank sensor all off the dizzy eliminating both oem sensors but very expensive

Also the LA blocks use a regular flat tappet hydraulic roller cam, as to where the magnums use a hydraulic roller. Although there are kits to make the LA use a roller camshaft. Just thought I'd throw that out there.
