i was talking to my mechanic and he said most often than not the pinging comes from an air leak in the plenum gasket causing oil to burn on the top of the piston and then causing the the spark to not fully burn or run to lean higher octane is a limited fix and over time it could burn the pistons up but if you drive like a grandma should buy some time

again , heat range = is the plugs ability to transfer combustion heat period ....heres another link to the facts (in case you missed the first link) this time its autolite .

cool engine , cold plug , head temp constant . again it combustion chamber temps not head temps .

i think you have detonation/pinging/spark knock confused with pre-ignition .
one event happens after the initial spark the other before . heres another link to explain the two different events .
