Engine Woes

Well, I'm absolutely sick right now.
I re-ringed, resealed, and installed a mild cam into my 360. Added fuel injection, and a few look-pretty parts.
Tonight I fired it up for the first time, and it sounds like there are a dozen ball bearings banging around in there.
I guess this weekend I get to rip it out again, but I have no idea what I'm even looking for...

Pistons hitting the valves would be the first thing. Are you sure you got the timing chain marks on the sprockets correct?

I turned the engine over by hand enough times that I think I would have noticed if the valves and pistons were hitting I would have noticed it earlier.. and aren't these non-interference engines?
I haven't had gauges wired yet, so this weekend I will verify I have oil pressure.

So I'm going to sleep well tonight!!
A friend stopped by the shop today and I made small talk with him about my engine problems. He helped me confirm I had oil pressure, then said he thought the noise was coming from below the engine, rather than up high.. I guess I just don't have an ear for those kinds of things.. Anyway, my whole dilemma was nothing more than a bent inspection cover hitting the torque converter bolts.

I feel pretty foolish for letting my mind jump to the worst case scenario right away, but I'm glad it's all taken care of with about 15 minutes of work.

so you won't be holding your boat in place with it?

ha! glad to hear all worked out well. I think the "doh!" moments are just part of tinkering with cars/trucks.
