I was just wondering how many miles can your 2nd gen gas engine get after the low fuel light comes on?

My gas light comes on when I have 5.5 to 6 gallons left. Just drive your truck until the gas light comes on and then fill it up. Compare the amount you filled to your tank size and viola!!

Whoa! A full tank of gas only gets me 310 miles to a tank, and that's past the E line, not till the light comes on.

Back to the first question, I can usually squeeze out another 40 -50 miles after the light comes on.

5.9L 2WD, Reg. Cab, Short Bed

3" Custom Exhaust (Unfortunately it's 1 of 400 California only truck, Emissions Blah! )

Custom Grill (kind of looks like braces for your teeth)

Aftermarket Driving lights

Full flow Air filter (old school)

Hughes Plenum Plate
180 Deg. Thermostat
Autolite 3923's
Brass cap and rotor
Silverstar Halogens

Still trying to fix all the stuff that was neglected or screwed up from the previous owner! (for example, orange electrical cord for speaker wires, etc.)

Just getting started with the mods
Will keep you posted!

IIRC the 8' beds have the 35 gal tanks, where the short beds only have a 26gal tank. This would explain the difference in miles per tank.

I have the 26 gal tank and i can prolly get another 40 miles after the light comes on...though i don't like doing that. Remember your fuel pump uses the gasoline to keep it cool. I you routinely run it till empty it will be operating at higher temperatures more often and shorten the life of the pump.

just my 2 cents,

Joe

so with my 35 gallon tank, my light came on @ 354. if I add another 50 miles. that means on the highway I am only getting 12mpg....that sucks.

well i have a 318 and this last trip which was all highway.. but big climbs my low fuel light came on at 345 kms so whats that 214miles?

ya pretty bad, but usually when my low fuel light comes on I usually find about 15-20 liters left so thats 5.5 gal

p.s
my truck sometimes will be better on gas.. it all depends.... I think it is time for a tune up

also I am runing 285/75/16 so that could be a factor

I've gone as far as 422 miles before my Fuel light came on, it was all stock except for the tires which were 305/70, after the fuel light came on I went 47 miles and of course ran out out of gas. ( was in BFE montana where gas stations are probably that far apart)

I have a '98 1500 Ouad 4wd shortbed 5.9L and my fuel light came on at all different levels, at times even with a full tank. A mechanic told me the sensor in the tank on the fuel pump is a bad design and corrodes prematurely causing it to give false warnings. My truck wouldn't start one day a couple of months ago and after towing it to the local dealer I found out it was the fuel pump, which I had suspected. Expensive fix but with a new pump the sensor got replaced too (all one unit). I now have a reliable fuel gauge (NICE!) and the warning light comes on at about 270 miles and I can always drive it to 320 (makes me nervous though because the needle is always buried at that point) but have never tempted fate to go past that. I already knew 320 was close to the limit from not having a trustworthy fuel guage and having to rely on the tripmeter for fillups, it sucked when I would forget to reset it after filling. By experimenting I found that when I had 320 on the tripmeter I would end up pumping 24 to 25.25 gallons at fillup into the 26 gal. tank. I usually average around 13mpg which is a lot less than other people told me they get before I bought this truck preowned a year ago this last August. We live in the Northern mountains of Utah though and I climb a lot of steep grades and passes but also get to coast the other side. In my opinion it's a gas hog but I love the truck and got a great deal on it because of high miles.
