Cup Holder Removal

I'm new to this board but have had a mopar in the garage since 72'. My 2001 RAM is the haul vehicle I use for my mopar musclecars when they can't make it under their own power. The POS cup holder finally broke. The plastic ears that hold the assembly in place finally gave out with 2 44oz big gulps in the holders. What a freakin mess. I can't believe lousy designed of this assembly. Not even reinforced with metal ears or a pivot rod. What were they thinking. Anyway. how the heck does this thing come off? By the amount of these things on ebay it must be a common occurrence with other RAM owners. Has anyone got any experience removing and replacing these things?........................170bcuda

if they are the ones on the dash that sit up high, yes they suck. anything will tip over in them.

Ok, let me clarify. This is the pos fold down cupholder on the dash beneath the stock stereo. So far all I see are four screws but there has to be others because the assembly won't come out with just those 4 screws removed. Of course muther mopar never makes things that easy..........170bcuda

ok if you are wanting to remove the cup holder, you are going to have to take the plastic dash piece off because there is also a screw under that piece. then the four screws you are talking about and that is all you have to do. the plastic piece just pops out, it has the little clips. hop this helps you.

Which plastic dash piece? It's all plastic. The dash bezel or all surrounding plastic, upper, lower, right or left?..............170bcuda

lol. ok were the radio is, the bezel that goes on the entire dash part needs to be popped off. then right below the radio their will be one screw their that comes off and then you take the other four screws out and it will pop out. also there will be a little light bulb on the cupholder which is for the night time. you will want to be careful when taking it out so you don't rip the wires. then when you get it out you can unclip the light bulb from the cup holder....if you need more help let me know

Is there any specific place I need to start to pop the bezel off? Plastic, pop it off and me is an oxymoron configuration of personage and parts. It's gonna be more like yank crack, curse, and replace because I just broke it :-) I hate plastic.............170bcuda

well what i do is i start where the radio is and work my way to the left, but i don't want to tell you to do that and tear it up, but that is how i take it off....they are on their tight on mine and you think you are going to tear it up but luckily i have taken it off about 5 times and have not cracked it yet. if it wasn't for that little screw behind their you would not have to mess with the dang thing.lol....but that is dodge.

Ugghhh, I got a bad feeling about this. That piece is on there pretty snug. I was doin' some preliminary tugging on it. I'm gonna wait till tomorrow and daylight to remove it. ............170bcuda

I did it when I had to remove my head unit. The trim peice does just POP right off. i was a bit hesitant at first as well cause it IS on there pretty snug. But it DOES come off.

Whats the price of a new cup holder from dodge? I'm gonna try to repair mine. If I can reinforce the broken ears with a fabricated metal piece, then drill out a hole for some sort of center shaft 6"-8" to run between them I think that'll solve that breakage problem. Plastic on plastic pivot like the way it's set up now is destined to break..................170bcuda
