muffler question

I was wondering? Does it matter where i put my muffler In my exhaust system? will it effect my sound if i put it in a different place & how so?
I know the most logical idea would be to put it at the end, but what if i put it in the middle of the car or under the rear passenger's? Idea's suggestions & help would be nice |

i just replaced mine in the stock location. seems to be enough for a mild modded car
