I posted this in General talk 3G and up but no takers.

So I thought I would give it one last try here.

I used Ziebart undercoating and rust protection on my last pickup
and was very satisfied.
I had the pickup for 13 years and really no rust through problems.

I live in Central Florida and at this time Ziebart does not have
any dealers here any longer. I have emailed them to see how
far I would have to travel to a sevice center.

Anyway do any of you have any suggestions on undercoating/sound reducing and Rust Protection on my new truck when I get it????
Is there a competitor to Ziebart that I might consider?
I'm open to suggestions.

I just grabbed some bottles of rust protection black spray paint and black undercoating at napa and did under my truck.

Is rust a big problem in Central Florida? Years ago I lived in Chicago where rust was mostly caused by the salt used on the roads in winter. With the salt in the air from the oceans, I would think that a good wax protection on your paint would be all you needed. Also, I think with the way the fenders and rocker panels are designed on todays vehicles, the rust pockets have been pretty much eliminated. As for sound deadening, you could dynomat the cab. The dealer probably offers some type or undercoat protection although the dealers ndercoat process is normally overpriced.

Yes rust can be a problem down here because of the salt air and if you drive on the beech.
I don't go to the beech often but sometimes.

Lots of rain almost everyday in summer time.
Dew almost every morning.

Vegaslightz what is dynomat?

I was thinking sound dampening because when I hear one of thoses
rocks fly up off the tire and hit the inside of the wheel well it usually
echo's thru the whole cab. and it sounds like all hell broke loose..

Anyway the do it your self may have to be the way I go?

The special tools and wands that the pro's use to get inside of door panels
between panels around doors any where there is double walls..Well I just
don't have tools and know where to penetrate to get those areas..

If you have ever seen a good Ziebart job you know what I'm talking about..

The kind of money we have to spend on our new trucks makes it worth
while to me anyway to protect it...

Oh Vegaslightz btw I have been reading up on paint care and protection.
some of your posts have been very helpfull...
I just bought a Porter Cable orbital polisher as recomemded I got the
7336SP model..
I'm going to try it out on my wifes car this week...

^I picked up some carpet padding from home depot for like 3 bucks, and put that under my floor on my truck, and it made a huge difference with road noise.. thats as much as i think you would need to stop those noises.. but an undercoating, honestly could be pretty easy to do yourself.

Ron, I know exactly what your talking about Ziebart rust proofing. I remember their commercials from when I lived in Chicago. After living here in Vegas where rust is not a problem, I don't know of any companies that still offer the process.

Dynamat is available just about at any of the car stereo stores or crutchfield.com carries it too. The best way to describe it, Dynamat comes in squares, it's about a 1/2" thick and it has an adhesive on one side and you stick it under carpet, inside door panels................

dont undercoat ur truck it will hold water in and rust even more

if any moisture is already there during undercoating it will become sealed in and probably have no place to escape and even after there COULD be some way for it to get behind the undercoating. i thought it was a pretty good idea but the mechanics at my work (i work at a local full serve gas station/garage) said for me to never get my truck undercoated because it holds in water.

Several years ago I heard some similar statements about undercoating.
IE: holding moisture and traping water etc.
So I did some research not real indepth but enough to make a $500.00 +
decision on whether to spend the money on undercoating or not.

To keep this post short (sorry it's not that short) I will pose a couple of questions to think about
and may be some others can chime in with there thoughts also.

If undercoating traps moisture then I would think that when you have
any Body repair and the paint shop applies paint it would also trap moisture
and the paint job would be compromised???

As far as holding water this may be true if some drain holes are covered
over that should not be. This may be where the do-it-yourselfer gets into
trouble. Even a shop that does this as a business may unknowingly do this.
This may be where the holds water traps water or moisture experience
comes into play..

Now for my experience.
I have had two vehicles undercoated and rust treatment applied by a professional
Shop, the same shop in both cases.
The first vehicle was a 1984 Mustang Convertible bought new Feb 1984 less then
50 miles on car and the undercoating rust treatment was applied.
This vehicle was garaged most of its life. I sold Car in or around 1996
There was not any rust on the vehicle. Under side and frame looked great
at the Twelve year mark when I sold it.

The second vehicle was a 1991 F150 this was bought new in Aug. 1991.
Undercoating and rust treatment again on this vehicle. This vehicle got the
Treatment with about 200 miles on the odometer.
The F150 set out side most of its life I would say 99% of the time
It was parked outside here in Florida.
I sold this F150 With 247,000 miles on it in sept. of 2004.
The only rust was a little surface rust at the rear edge of truck bed where
the drop in bed liner had rubbed paint off and a small spot aft. of the driver
door on Lower rocker panel where gravel had chipped paint. this also was
surface rust about 1 inch long and 1/4 wide.
Under carriage and frame was in good shape with out rust..

Note: These vehicles were only treated once...NO reapplictions!

Note: I try to do all my own maintenance like oil changes brake jobs tune ups
etc. so I'm all over my vehicle and can and would spot trouble areas.

I will concur that with the corrosion control that the Major Manufactures have
put in place,, Undercoating and rust protection may not be needed
as much as say 20-30 years ago..

Like my original post says the company I used before no longer
has any dealers in my area or State of Florida so I'm looking for a replacement shop
to do the job for me...
