Hey guys. I have a 1998 dodge Ram quad cab with the 5.2L 318 V8 motor in it. It is unable to start. It turns over but does not fire. Although I don't have a fp guage, there is fuel getting to the engine as I can smell it and there seems to be fuel in the oil from attempting to start it. There is also spark, as I checked by grounding the spark plus wires with another spark plug to the manifold, when attempting to start it. I also checked the fuel pump relay and all the fuses. I have no idea why it is not firing. Could it possibly be a sensor thats preventing it from starting such as the O2 or Map sensor? I also tried to extract any codes from the pcm by turning the key on-off-on-off-on, with no success. Does anyone have any idea of what it could be?

well, if you're getting fuel, then you're obviously not getting spark, check your distributor/cap all connections of that sort, you don't want to flood your motor too bad or you could screw something up internally... be careful

I don't know what your problem is, but occasionally mine won't start either. It floods itself out and doesn't even try to start. Then if I put the pedal to the floor to dry it out it will usually start after awhile. But it doesn't seem to make sense as it usually starts fine. I had it die on me a couple times after driving about 200yrds-1/2mile when it was cold in the morning. Just flat died. Weird.

That is exactly what it acts like. I didn't know these things used a crank sensor. Duh. Where is it, and is it hard to change/expensive?

Hey guys, Just an update. After 3 days of it not being able to start I tried it today and boom, she fired right up. Niow she seems to be operating normally. Any ideas why it all of a sudden starts? now for the last 3 days we have had a lot of wain and humidity and today was relatively dry. Could it still be the crank sensor? or distributor?

There could be moisture in your dist. cap causing it to not to fire at the right cylinder. I have had this happen a lot when I clean out engines. Replace the cap and rotor and see if it happens the next time it is wet out.
