came up with a 5-spd to fit my truck yesterday. we had a 5-spd out of a Dakota sitting around the shop and i had just pulled a bellhousing off a 88 4x4 to see if it would fit my 833 OD trans. it didn't so i picked up a Borg Warner T-5 that we had sitting there also and set it on the bell. did'nt fit neither, so i layed it off to the side too. then i happened to look at the 'Kota trans, it was out of a 4-cyl truck but i had already checked the input shaft before, same length, spline and thickness as a 4-spd. bolt pattern lokked pretty close so i took the 4-cyl bell off and set the trans down on the bell, and whadda ya know matched right up. so i now have a bolt-in 5-spd that will fit my 72, all i have to do is convert to hyd clutch and lenghten the driveshaft 3 inches. I can even use my 11" clutch since the bell is off a 4x4 . Also I'll have to cut my trans tunnel and make it taller i think, which is okay since it's kinda rusty anyway

What year Kota , I think you might wind up breaking that trans, I know the v6 box out of the later trucks will hold up to some mild to aggressive driving( but you can't beat the crap out of them,
I've used the 87-88 ax15 behind a 318 for a while , key word is awhile after 4 months it started to make noise.
Have you tried to mod the Hydraulics out of the Dak, I've been meaing to look @ the 87 I have out back to see if i can use the Pedel & slave cylinder.

Why mess with Dakota parts, the later model full-sizes had hyd clutches, that's what i'm getting my parts out of, actually out of an 88 4x4, everything swaps right in.

The trans i got was actually behind a 4-banger originally, it's a NP 535 w/ a 3.79 1st gear. I know it won't stand no power shifting or abuse like that, but I'm gonna see how long it holds up. If i can get my old pedals out that is, they are stuck to the pivot shaft, i can move them a little bit but i can't slide the shaft out at all, tried to pry it out but the flange just bent. i may have to cut them out.

well I got it bolted in, had to cut the trans tunnel as i figured, looks like i'm gonna have to cut most of it out but i got enough of it cut to get it in there. everything looks good, looks like i'll even be able to keep the stock crossmember and trans mount. Even the 'Kota shift lever comes up in the right spot.

Only problem i see so far is the slave cylinder it right up against the floor, so close in fact that i had to turn it up-side down to get the trans in. So either i will need a shorter/smaller slave, or I notch the floor to clear this one, neither of which is a big deal. Also i need to lengthen the driveshaft by about 3" and put the Dakota slip yoke on it(the piece that slides in the trans).
