I hope someone can help me. This is my first post although I have been reading these here for a couple of weeks. I recently purchased a 76 d100 it has a three speed manual on the column. Slant six completely stock. My problem is this the linkage on the column is really sloppy causing me to lock up the shifter going from 1rst to 2nd if i am not really careful. I have called the dealorship and they no longer have parts to fix this. Is there something I can do to the stock linkage to fix this or does any one know of someone who sells an aftermarket fix or maybe nos. Any help would be apreciated.

What is probably your problem is that the linkage bushings are worn out. I think the bushings are the same for a 3spd as the old A-833 4spd. Try Passon Performance as they deal with the 4spd, they may be able to help you. www.passonperformance.com

Floor conversion is not an option i love the tree that is one of the biggest reasons for buying that particular truck. I can drive it the way it is I have gotten used to it. I was just going to make that my first fix in a list of many. Thanks guys I will look into both sites.

I havnt done much work inside steering columns so I'm not of much help with the internal workings but you can also try some of these places for a used one perhaps and piece together one good one for your truck.
www.car-part.com www.junkyarddog.com Also check the linkage that goes from the bottom of the steering column to the tranny and see if it has any plastic bushings or missing bushings, these cause problems on the auto tranny shifters. If you need some parts blow ups that just Email me and I will send you some. Repair and Parts http://www.columnsgalore.com http://www.pacificautosalvage.com http://www.tekmagic.com/steering/service.htm |

Thanks again Chump I will look at the other sites you mentioned as columnsgalore couldn't help. Also I would definately like some blow ups and would sure like to know what that linkage that is at the bottom of the column is called. That is where my problem is, it is loose. Probably some kind of bushing in there. I'm not sure what to ask for although when i call or email for parts I try to describe them. You can email pics to dragon706@alltel.net or just post them here. Thanks man for your help.

This is what the bottom end should look like...the bushings and grommets from the previous picture are the ones that fit into the levers at the bottom of the column.

I see that there was a bushing and a grommet used on that linkage. Those numbers listed next to the parts isn't a part no., but a reference number that is used in conjunction with the parts manual to find the part no.
If someone had a parts manual of that era you could get the part no. for those bushings and give them to your dealer. Has this been tried?

The levers are where my problem is they are loose. I think I might take the column out and apart to see if I can figure something to replace the bushings or whatever is there. I work in a metal fab shop and I am a cnc laser programmer so maybe I can make something to fix it. Thanks for all your help guys. If anyone can come up with the replacement part numbers in the mean time please let me know.

Go to www.partsvoice.com and pop those numbers in. That site does a nationwide dealer search and places that handle NOS parts.

Thanks again Chump you are a real help. I am begining to see why everyone goes with a floor shifter. These parts are hard to find and pricey. I took the column apart last night and found that the 2nd/3rd gear lever is actually part of the shift tube. (Incidently the part number that is hiding from you.)unless I can get that number and find these last parts you gave me I may go with a floor shifter too. Last resort.

Here's the number... TUBE, Steering Column Gearshift #3496285 You may want to try to get a used column for parts and see if that helps your quest? I remember my 51 Chevy and what a kick it was to drive the 3 on a tree and use those vacuum wipers. ![]() |
