Unfortunately the best place to start is at the sender unit wires at the top of the fuel tank. These can get loose or corroded.

Ground the sending unit connector leads, at the sending unit, in the vehicle.
With ignition in On position, a grounded input will cause the fuel or temperature gauge to read maximum or above.

If the above happens then you have a sender unit problem and if that's the case, save your self some time and pulled out hair by having the old sending unit rebuilt by a pro, as the brand new Mopar sending units have been the pits for reliabilty!

There are a number of places that specialize in Instrument/Gauge Repair that also repair sending units. You can check your Yellow Pages or give these guys a call.
