hi looking for info on an unexpected find

I have had my w250 for 4 years and its never missed a beat
When I inherited truck I was told the original engine blew up and was replaced and I never asked more

Yesterday I decided to id the engine to find out exactly what I had and wow was I supprised to find the date stamp on the block clearly said 1995 and the build number consistant with a magnum 5.9 engine.

The heads and all accessories look to be from the original LA 360 engine and it has the mechanical fuel pump too

How did someone manage this and how is my engine able to run if these heads appearently don't work on magnum engines

Should I not be running LA 360 plugs and oil filter in this engine ?

you can run the old LA pulley setup on a magnum series engine and the magnum blocks do have a place for a mechanical fuel pump. i'm guessing the spark plugs and oil filter are the same. if they've worked well thus far it should be fine. are you sure you have the old LA heads? magnums have aluminum heads. so if they are iron then most likely LA heads.

correction.........you can use a timing chain cover from an LA block on a magnum block to use a mechanical pump

Yeah I took a long hard look at the heads and they are not aluminum plus magnum heads have 10 bolt valve covers and mine only has 5

What bothers me is the difference in the way these two head setups oil the valve train

When I look down into the inside of valve covers with engine running there is not any visible oil flow if any

ahhh i see what you're saying. magnums oil through the push rods. LA's dont. i cant remember how to setup LA heads on a magnum engine. i've read an article about it somewhere. cant remember. all i remember is that it takes a little machine work and you can use LA heads on a magnum block......for oiling purposes

The only machine work is to open up the pushrod holes in the head with a burr bit
You can use any aftermarket lifter or if you want to be specific any V8 AMC lifter & 7.625-7.650 hollow pushrod lengths depend on deck heights & head gasket thickness

No Magnum 318 or 360 ever came factory with aluminum heads

What I just realized, good way to tell the difference between heads would be LA has shaft rockers, magnum has pedestal mounted rockers.......at least stock anyway

Exactly what I was going to say. I'd still be curious as go what exactly what done, but you wouldn't have driven it without problem for 4 years if it wasn't working.
