I have a '08 single cab long bed Hemi with 71k miles that's getting what I consider horrible mpg. I've read and been told 13-16 is avg. I've even been watching how I drive to make sure I'm not in it too hard and that's when I averaged 9.8 mpg. Driving normal I'm probably down to 7-8 mpg.

Anyway, I haven't looked but I'm assuming my plugs and air filter needs to be changed so I plan on doing that. What else will get me back to normal mpg.

Also I'm about to do a search on this but what's the best air filter for these engines?

Thanks in advanced!

I'm on my second HD Hemi and I am doing better than your truck. Looks to me like its time for the Hemi Tune Up for your truck.

I just got my '08 Hemi about 2 weeks ago but its a quad cab 4x4. The worst I've seen is 10mpg but that was last night when I layed the pedal down for a few seconds just to see what it would do. Hit 90 in just a few seconds so I layed back off of it. But under normal driving conditions ( not babying the pedal but not dumping fuel either,) I normally get about 14mpg. I haven't checked the air filter yet or the plugs either. But I imagine replacing them could only help. I'm interested to see what the Hemi vets on here say that will help improve mpg.

Once you do the tune-up find a place that sells 100% gas with no ethanol & pay the price for it. In the long haul...... it's much better for your truck and less problems down the road.

Yea I'm not looking for crazy high mpg, just wanna get what I'm supposed to from factory or atleast closer.

I do have a couple of 100% gas stations around here, I didnt think they made that much of a difference.

How are you calculating mileage? The overhead is not the most accurate if you are constanly reseting it and then city driving. I get around 9-10, but I drive it hard and it has some decent performance mods done to it.

I get about 11 when I beat on it but can pull close to 13.5 driving easy. Not sure how putting an after market cam is gonna affect it.

I didnt think programmers did much for gas engine trucks, thanks for the heads up! I'll let you know if I need anything.

I have a base model truck, I don't have the overhead gauge on the roof. I'm calculating the old fashion way, using math lol.

Exactly the same for me unloaded. My all-time worse is while towing; 7mpg hand-calculated.

My '07 was only getting about 10-12, but I had it leveled with a 3" BL (though I was running stock diameter tires). One thing I'm surprised nobody has asked is about rims/tires/lift. Are you stock height? Is it lifted/lowered? Is it leveled? Do you have larger than stock tires? Do you have wider than stock tires? These (and many other things) factor into your fuel economy.

It does sound like you need a tune up though. 8-9 is pretty bad unless you're running 35's or something like that.

how much idling are you doing? That will really take a bite out of mileage

Expect about 1- 2 mpg worse depending on the cam

Agreed! Everyone always claims these great city numbers but even when I was stock and drove efficiently I only managed about 11.5 in the city. Now with my lift and tires I get all giddy when I see 9 or 10. My engine has fresh plugs, oil and air filter and it doesn't increase my mileage. So I really wish people would share their knowledge (and pictures) of how to get this great mileage.

Until I put the 4.56 R&P on the truck the best mileage I got was 11.5 on the highway and about eight in town.
