Buying advice for 3rd gen Ram 1500

I'm in the market for a Ram 1500 4WD quad cab. Mostly a weekend driver to haul various loads (furniture, yard waste, motorcycle on occasion) and also tow a 23' boat (approx 6,000 lbs).

My local dealership was pushing a 2007 5.7L V8 Big Horn with 57K miles for $19K, but I can't justify spending that much. I'd prefer to stay in the $10-14K range.

I found a couple of options going a bit older with some additional mileage:
washingtondc.craigslist.org/nva/cto/3580296156.html
dashmotors.com/2002-Dodge-Ram1500/Used-Truck/Manassas-VA/4865/2564391/Details.aspx

The HemiSport is growing on me and I like the black on black, but the 2002 has the bigger 5.9L V8 and a few less miles. I've heard the 5.7L V8 is a great engine, I would assume similar with the 5.9L? Anything in particular with this gen that I should look out for when going over the vehicle and test driving? Other buying advice/comments?

I'm looking forward to owning my first truck and joining the community here. Thanks!

I was just informed that the 2002 5.9L isn't a HEMI. The power and torque numbers greatly favor the 5.7L HEMI. I think this just shifted my decision towards to the 2004. Would you guys lean towards the 5.7L HEMI even with a few more miles? Both are clean, in great condition, and drive well.

Hemi definitely has more power out of the gate than the 5.9L. The 5.9l are also great motors but I'd probably lean towards the hemi as well. More power to start with and way better aftermarket for them compared to the 5.9

Thank you all for the info and welcomes. My budget increased significantly since I first started looking, but I am excited about the truck that I got. 2007 Dodge Ram 1500 SLT, 55K miles, and lots of upgrades (spray in bed liner, tool box, dual exhaust in the rear, chrome wheels and brand new Terra Grappler tires). I bought from a private owner for $18,350.

She does like to suck up some gas. Still on my first tank, but it's looking right around 12mpg. It's a good thing this is a secondary vehicle for me or I'd be going broke!
