Getting out of Park

Hard to get out of park
must wiggle shifter arm several times before it comes out of park. hear light noise as it comes out of park. dakota2004 SLT, 4.7L 55,000 Thank you for your help. |

No hills not even a bump, parked on, flat as a pancake.

It's your brake switch at the pedal. Check the connections, if ok, you'll need a new switch. It will not allow the truck to be removed from brake unless it's activated.
IF it's cause you're on a hill. Before placing your truck in park, apply the parking brake. Then when you start the truck, put it in drive then remove the brake..

I've disconnected the wires on the switch a few weeks ago, that allowed be to use the truck, but I've not had time to go into the city dealer for that switch.
To me, this soft noise (as it comes out of park) into R, N, D seems to be inside the column. ( I always use parking brake) Thank you. |

Pull the gear selector boot out of the column and check the locking mechanism. There's a tab that is suppose to slide in out of the way when you turn the key. When it gets sticky from lack of lubrication, it won't let you take it out of park. Had this problem last year, put a tiny shot of silicone grease on it and never again had an issue yet.

Funny I was trying to get the plastic shroud off, so I could see the inside better.
( Shroud hanging up on left front steering wheel end, side of column, don't want to break it). Shifter boot popped out, noticed that if I put light pressure on that small rectangular tab I could get it out of park. Did you just lube that tab area? or do I still have to get the shroud off, so I can lube the top of the tab mechanism that I can't get to, without getting that shroud off. Thank You Josh!! |

If I remember right, that tab connects to a slider mechanism that moves it, it's right there in plain view when you look through the shifter hole. Put a shot of lube on the slider then it'll move freely.

I'm out of town till Wednesday. I've got a can of Silicone Spray ( Sprayway # 945 if I recall ), I can put that on slide on Wed or Thur. Will let you know. Thanks |
