Lets talk diesel motors

The 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee has been officially revealed.

It should arrive at dealerships prior to 2013 closing maybe as soon as late summer early fall. It will optionally offer the new VM Motori 3.0 named EcoDiesel. Its rated at 240 HP with 420 TQ plus 21 City 30 Hwy and comes with the same version of the 8 speed that will come behind the 5.7 & 6.4 (car) Hemi. Rumored to be offered in the RAM 1500 soon.

The same engine & 8 speed trans is also offered in the sister VW Audi & Porche SUVs with basically the same HP/TQ ratings (241/406) and will also be offered in the Fiat owned Maserati SUV. Maserati is said to have theirs tuned to 300 HP but has not been released yet. The engine has two seasons under its belt in the VW & Audi so tuners have already had a chance to work with it some.

Interesting for comparison BMW also offers a newer 3.0 turbo diesel V6. But from what I have read the VM Motori 3.0 is said to have more power potential & strength. Anyway back to tuners this is what I read on Malone Tuning's website.

US & Canada spec BMW 3.0 TDI

HP 265 --- 310 to 340, with chip only tuning.
TQ 425 --- 515, again with chip only tuning.

US & Canada spec VM 3.0 EcoDiesel

HP 240 --- 280 to 290, with chip only tuning.
TQ 420 --- 427, with chip only tuning

I suspect additional power upgrades may be held up by the transmission not that even the current version used with the 3.0 isn't capable of handling a good bit more as its rated to 516 TQ. I suspect 350 HP & 515 TQ is attainable reliably. In the article I linked below it lists GM as a 50% owner of VM Motori which I understand is no longer true.
Your thoughts?

I like the idea of the new motors. This will be reasonable in a 1500. I would like to see it in a twin turbo setup i maybe interested in a switch in 3 years

ramryder My goal use for the truck will be to do a lot of light to medium weight towing as a business as well as a daily driver. So it will be great for my use. For the majority of people the 3.6 or Hemi will probably be the best choice for their use. But fwiw the reviews from the people who own the VW & Audi SUVs with this motor & trans have been that its very well liked.

Nobody has any input on this engine for use in the 1500? Don't think the lil diesel can perform? Allpar had 485 lbs for a dressed 09 5.7 Hemi and 498 lbs for the new diesel so unlike the 6.7 Cummins it has no weight handling penalty. Strictly for comparison the Hemi puts out 395HP + 407TQ = 802 if the lil turbo diesel can be turned up to 350HP + 500TQ = 850 it would put out more than a stock Hemi. It would just lay it down differently.

Just asking what you think of the prospect of them using this motor in the 1500 and turning up the wick so to speak.

It will work magically with the 8spd and some performance upgrades.

I think I would buy one to go with my 09.
