New guy here.. I know there is a welcome forum, but I wanted to say howdy here.

New guy here. Picked up the Beast before Xmas. It's a 79 D150 Powerwagon 4x4. (can't post a pic til I hit 5 post) Stay tuned.

My first truck was a 76. So it's like old times for me. Look forward to slowing fixing it up for my boy.

I'll be asking alot of questions and looking for parts. The truck had been held together with bailing wire and duct tape and contained romx wire til I got it home and started re wiring and replacing brackets.

My next purchase is a carb and intake for the 318, any suggestions? Don't need face melting performance, need it to be a little more reliable and not die when I come to a stop. (2 barrel is in bad shape)

thanks, see ya in the forums.

welcome.

i would say if you plan on getting a new carb don't get one over 400cfm if you can. people seem to like over carburating trucks and it robs a truck of performance and optimal gas mileage.

Do you have a early or late 79? Early had the two round headlights and the late was two rectangular ones per side?

sorry about the lack of intake and carb for you, i sent a PM. i tried to change my classified but it's been closed. i cant change it for some reason. i was on ebay last night looking at 318 parts. saw a carb and edelbrock performer intake combo for fairly cheap. both have been painted black. i recall it being a fresh rebuild on the carb.

i think i saw a couple of rochester carbs at the auto shop i work at. been sitting outside for a while though. want me to check them out?

Welcome! Come on in and have a seat friend.

I recently bought a 78 D200 with a 318 and the first thing I did was swapped the 2bbl for a 4bbl, I am the reason maachine no longer has his setup.

Many speak badly of the ole Quadra jets but I am personally a fan of them, most of the na sayers either don't know how to properly tune a quadra jet or just won't take the time to do it right.

roanoker is correct in that about the rochester quadra jet. to add to that, i have also read on a few forums that the q-jet is also the best carb for 4 wheelin next to the holley truck avenger.

My Everyday driver and the Beast in the driveway

Since this pic, I've replaced the hood latch (no more tie down under the bumper)
I've also pulled out the gauge cluster as none of the gauges work, speedo didn't have a needle.

Anyone refit the cluster with all new gauges?

Welcome!

I personally appreciate the simplicity of Edelbrock carbs, and I agree with "over-carbing." If the internal components to your engine are working well and you don't need a rebuild, there's a few things you can do help a little.

Since you are looking for reliability with minimal performance, I recommend a smaller 4bbl, aftermarket intake, and a custom exhaust. Those are some mild improvements that give a "custom" appeal to your pickup.

Anything short of a custom engine build should be mild enough to keep you outta trouble.

If an engine build isn't for you, I'd recommend matching your axle gearing to your tire size and needs. Gearing can make an under-powered turd pull like a tractor!

A transmission swap can also make a big difference in driveability...

Thanks for all the great input ya'll. I've got a few carbs on ebay in my watch list.
I pulled out the gauges last night, thats gonna be my interior project 1 with trying to find a driverside door. The bottom is rotting out of mine. I'll keep you all posted with pics and B&Ms (b*tch and moans) haha.

Thanks again, and I look forward to asking for help and hopefully being able to help with the knowledge base.

you may also want to look into the amp meter bypass while you have the gauges out. some people like keeping the amp gauge working or some people like like completely bypassing it but it is something you should fix so you are never stuck on the side of the road with a dead truck.

before you start replacing gauges check em out first. a 9v battery on each gauge will let you know if its good. should peg the needle, don't leave it on long or you will need new gauges. if they are good its probably the voltage regulator on the board, notorious trouble spot. i disconnected the ammeter for a while but reconnected it when i scored the metal gauge bucket. didn't like not having it working

Will do, I haven't been back in the garage to miss with it yet. A guy from facebook is possible selling me an extra cluster. My main concern is the speedometer. It started grinding and whining, then spinning like crazy then snapped the needle and stopped working. With the cluster out the speedometer cable turns freely while I'm driving so my main question now is "is the cable shot or was it the gauge? or should I replace both?"

if the cable is still turning it should be fine. grease it up a little. silicone grease works well. i'm thinking it was the speedometer itself. if i recall correctly it has plastic gears inside it. there are companies online that rebuild them.
