2012 or 2013

Sorry if this has been hashed out, searched but didn't find an answer.

Im checking out some good deals on 2012s, and was wondering if there was any reason (other than the 8spd auto not yet available) that would point a guy towards the more expensive 2013?

I tow a 6.5 k TT on occasion, and thats about the most abuse it would see.

I'm assuming i'll still be doing the 4k rpm up the couple miles of 6% grade that i have to cross for my regular camping outings

Any advice would be appreciated. I have a "05 rcsb so i have an idea..

IMHO take advantage of year end close out on '12's

i think the 8spd only comes with the 6cyl.

That's a good idea. I also heard on another Ram forum, that they are giving great incentives on the 2013's. Good luck.

Go for the 12' you'll love it and get a smokin' deal

Save some money get a 12 IMO. Yeah the 13s are out but its a mid cycle update just wait until the Gen 5s come out.

I see the 13 as much more then just a midlife refresh. But if you don't want the 8 speed or the air suspension, I don't see the 13s better interior as a big enough motive to upgrade. In which case I would save what I can and get the 12.

As it turns out, they do offer good prices, but not much for trade in, maybe cuz it was a ford?

For me, I think i'll start making payments to myself for a couple years, then re-evaluate, sure I could possibly sell outright, but smartest to hang on to my present rig for the time being and get my moneys worth out of it.

I've picked up both types and this is the only problem. When you buy the 2012 versus the 2013 and you drive the '12 off the lot, it's already one year old. When the deal is really good, I could care less but it is something to think about.

save your money buy 2012. I got ten grand off sticker. try that on 2013?

Very true, but it have will low, low miles on it for being a year old and the money savings can go towards payments or mods.

let me explain why youll be doing 4k rpm up a grade. our "5" speed climbing a grade going lets say 55mph under a load has two options...
2nd gear which equals 4200 rpms and
3rd gear which equals 2800 rpms (making up numbers and speeds for illustrative purposes but you get the idea)

the 8 speed automatic will have more options for the computer to pick from.
4th gear 4200 rpms (yes, same gearing as our 2nd)
5th gear 3500 rpms
6th gear 2800 rpms (1:1 ratio is the same as our 3rd/drive)

our truck has to run over 4k for that load whereas the 2013 could match the load at a more reasonable rpm if it wanted to, switching to a gear that splits ours, saving fuel, rpms, and not bleeding off speed like ours would if it downshifted to 2800rpms. the 8 speed is gonna be the real deal for towing.

cons to the 2013.
1. rebates make the 12 4-5k more affordable
2. can find a junkyard/used/jasper transmission for a 2003-2012 trans no problem a third the price of the new 8 speed.
3. bugs haven't been worked out on the 2013
4. theyre not even making the hemi 8 speed yet, need a few months to see them on the lot and because of the demand vs guys waiting/bidding them up, you wont be getting a deal on one.

Im with you on the tranny improvement, but then i thought, wouldnt an 8 speed hunt more due to having another gear closer, causing more heat etc

You could always put a 3000 Stall Torque Converter and some 4.56 gears in the 12 which will make a huge difference over stock and if you shop around right you will still save 3k still when comparing against a 13.

"hunting" is not a trait that the ZF 8 speed has shown in ANY vehicle it has been used in. (Im not just talking the Charger and 300. Im talking about the Audis, BMWs, Bentleys, Jags, Range Rovers, that it is also used in.)

tranny don't make that much of different in pulling... where does your truck make peak torque at? around 4 grand that is where the problem is. That is why the new ford v 6 makes torque at 2500 rpm much like a diesel truck.

the heck it doesnt. wanna tow with a 2 speed powerglide? dads old 68 impala has one and i cant imagine towing even with 4.56s!!!

no. they dont hunt. also they use a much more efficient lower stall torque convertor. less heat will keep any tranny happy
