Local dealer charges $50 if I recall correctly. Check your owner's manual. If you have all your keys and are just adding another there is a procedure you can follow - no dealer needed. However, if a key is "missing" or "lost", you have to go to the dealer.

Below is the procedure for programming a key from my 2006 Ram 1500 manual:

Customer Key Programming
You can program new keys to the system if you have two
valid keys by doing the following:
1. Insert the first valid key into the ignition and turn the
ignition to the ON position for at least 3 seconds but no
longer than 15 seconds. Turn the ignition back to the OFF
position and remove the first key.
2. Insert the second valid key and switch the ignition to
the ON position within 15 seconds. After 10 seconds the
Security Light will begin to flash. Turn the ignition back
to the OFF position and remove the second key.
3. Insert a blank Sentry Key into the ignition and switch
the ignition to the ON position within 60 seconds of
having removed the second key. After 10 seconds the
Security Light will stop flashing, then turn on for 3
seconds; then turn off.
The new Sentry Key has been programmed. The Keyless
Entry Transmitter will also be programmed during this
procedure. Repeat this process to program up to an
additional 6 keys. A maximum of 8 keys can be programmed
to the system, including the original keys
provided with the vehicle.

Yes, try this first. As far as dealer cost, that may vary by dealer depending on their labor rate.

Those instructions don't work on the 2010 Rams. I just got back from the dealer. The fob i bought on e-bay did not work. It cost me 37.50 for the fob and 40.00 for them to try to program it. Bummer!!!

After buying a 2 fobs from ebay dealers that wouldn't program. I sprung for a new one. It cost me 201.00 for the new fob and programing, plus 40.00 for trying to programs the 2 from ebay. What a rip.

I usually get mine at the local locksmith. Got 2 keys, 2 fobs (programmed) recently for about $150. This was for a 2002 jeep liberty though. They are OE Daimler-Chrysler branded as well.

If you think that's bad, a coworker of mine has a Pontiac G8. Replacement fobs from the dealer retail at $500 and does not include programming.......Oh and the fobs come from Australia (The G8 was built by Holden for GM).
