Ok so I'm just looking for some advice. My mom has a 2004 Limited D, yesterday the engine blew up. She was literally a block from her house and she heard a pop and the D just quit. Upon further inspection it looks like a piston blew out of the block near the starter. Her D only has 80,000 on the odometer and is treated like a baby. I'm just wondering what happened here? Any comments are appreciated.

sorry to hear that!

hard to armchair diagnose an engine failure w/o being the one who takes the motor apart. so many variables.

did you get it to shop yet to find out the cause?

Boy sorry to hear about the engine. Were there any signs of early failure?

Quills:

If you do some searching on the internet, you will see that a number of the 04 Hemi's as well as a few 05's have experienced catastrophic failure for one of two reasons.

One of them is a collapsed valve spring that allows the attendant valve to drop into it's cylinder destroying the engine.

The second issue is purported to be a crankshaft quality/clearance issue the eventually results in a piston exiting the side of the block like yours.

There does not seem to be a rhyme or reason for the timing of the event. For some, it was 60-80K. For others it was 100K plus.
In my case, it was a dropped valve at 39K.

Victims of the destroyed Hemis have said that the fix runs between $4K to 7K to get their D back on the road depending on whether the replacement engine is new or used.

The labor to make the swap seems to be in the $1.8K to $2.2K range.

Hope this helps you...........................Don

I'm on engine number two myself. First one died @130K. There wasn't anything poking out of the block. So I'm pretty sure that it was a swallowed valve. Cost to repair was just under $4,000.00 with a used 17K engine that came out of a wreck.

RWH

Hopefully your replacement engine was a much later model. Although 17k seems to be a jewel of a find, hopefully it was built after they discovered the spring issue and installed the upgraded springs.

If not, you may be in for a replay of a blown engine. Another D owner was experiencing a misfire, and caught the issue as a broken valve spring before it took the engine out.

I believe he ended up pulling both heads and going over them while replacing all springs with the ones used in the 6.1L Hemi.
