You have to change the carrier to a limited slip or locker. You have lots of options here. If your truck is a gen2 your front axle will be disengaged by the transfer case(no drive). No need for locking hubs. To have "TRUE 4 wheel drive" you need both axles(front and rear) to be LS or locker.

-so they will already be able to fit into my 1500 axles?
-where would i buy the locker?
-would i only need the locker, or do i have to buy a kit of some sort?

Like i said before you have a lot of options. What are you going to be doing with your truck that you want/need "true 4WD"? Limited slip diffs are good for every day use. Lockers are just that. They "lock" the axle. Like having a solid axle. Not good on the street. You can get an air locker. Lock the axle with a flip of a switch. lot of options. Do a Google search.

most people dont start by locking the frt to start with. go for the 9 1/4 upgrade first. two options here

lockrite: its a syncro gear and it is a solid lock up. kinda like a ratchet wrench in the rear diff. research it. just a little cheaper, little less reliable, can be swapped right into the open diff rear. not much work involved

truetrac: near $600 for the kit, pull the entire contents of the 9 1/4, real reliable, tech and labor intensive

what do you need posi for, just a two wheel peel?

If you are going to the expense of installing the LSD or full case locker, then regear your axles at the same time. No need to pay for labor twice. Deeper gears will give you the pulling power you are looking for.

http://completeoffroad.com/i-1401004...sl-d44-30.html
and i might throw this is the 2500 rear axle.

Lunch box lockers are all ok. It all depends on what size tire you are going to use. Most of them are rated for 33 or smaller. Another thing to consider is how you drive you truck. If you use the skinny pedel alot, you are going to break something. Usually the stock carrier or the gear. Also if your truck is manny, never left off the clutch to quickly. Bad things happen when you do that. What gearing does you truck have now?

i would suggest again against locking the frt diff. the driver side axle has a bottle neck down in gauge, in other words the frt axles have week spots in them. just lock the rears and try that for a while.

i dont know if the 2500 axles will just bolt right up- the issues are the leave widths are wider and if the universals are the same size for the drive shaft? idk? it really could become expensive! maybe you could grind off the sides of the leaf perch and make the u-bolts fit, but the uni-s are possible an issue. and your going to need new rims. most people max out thier 1500s at 5" and 35" tires. just looking out for your bottom line. if its a big build up you got, i'd run the trutrac from detroit. the lockrites are common on jeeps and lesser hp vehicles.
