Ok, I hate to make another thread but I'm thinking its just a thermostat and wanted opinions.

What is happening:

Start truck, let idle for awhile, get in and drive. Regardless of outside temp, the needle for the engine temp doesn't move off of the lowest position. I originally thought it needed a temp sensor but when I hooked up my plow for our last storm, the needle started to come up to just above 130* and the vents started blowing warm air.

I didn't really notice the no warm air from the vents until we had some really cold weather and the inside of the truck just wasn't warming up. I've taken trips to Mass from my house and the temp of the truck never moved off of the bottom position.

This has me thinking Thermostat.

Next question- Never done one, and not afraid to try since it seems simple. My question is the coolant. Do I just fill with coolant and be done with it, or does it have to be 50% coolant, 50% water - distilled I'd assume. Thanks in advance.

I think I'm going to buy the straight coolant, its about the same price and technically your getting more (I don't want to pay for the added water). Its generally pretty cold up here but nothing crazy, what do you recommend?

if replacing all anti freeze. what i usally do is pickup two gallons of green
add 1/2 gallon strait to radiator then fill that with water giving it a 50% mix
add that to radiator ,, then open second gallon and 1/2 fill the empty and fill both with water giving a 50% mix and add to truck as needed and extra in resiavior ,, system will burp while driving
add to truck as needed till up to operating temp and thermostst opens cycles

Cool thanks, Yeah I'd rather replace it all now since I'm assuming it hasn't been done before.

I always like going with the 70% mix for the max protection not like it cost that much more.

Please check to see if your system needs to be burped . if you have replaced a hose and lost coolant or replaced radiator or heater core it is possible you need to burp the system, start with a cold engine take the radiator cap off and start the engine stand to the side as you want to avoid getting antifreeze in your eyes or clothes. after a few minutes you might see air bubbles coming up through the coolant look into the radiator opening but do so from an angle . or use a mirror . you may have to repeat this a couple of times but if you have air in the system it will prevent the coolant from going into the heater core. if you do see air bubbles coming up make sure to top off the coolant with 50/50 or if it is not up to par you may want to use full strength antifreeze. you can also have someone monitor the temperature and not let it get to hot.

Drill a small hole(1/8 inch)in the t-stat and you won't have to burp the system.
