Hi guys...

I've got a burning smell coming from the driver side of the engine after it's been running a while, and have no idea what to check for. Recent work I've done is:

Timing belt (broke last week, had new one put in)
Water pump
oil change
changed a hard brake line... somehow magically broke at the shop.
checked all other fluids, and they're looking good.

Any clues?

Check for oil (brake fluid?) that may have got on your exhaust manifolds when the broken line was changed.

Any chance of explaining the smell?
Does it smell like rubber being burned, plastic, oil, sweet smell like coolant, electrical burning smell.
All these smells have their own unique odor to them.
Hoses laying on an engine will cause the rubber smell.
Wiring harness touching a hot area will cause the burning plastic smell.
Leaking oil/spilled oil hitting the exhaust will cause a burning oil smell.
Coolant leaks will cause the sweet smell.
Wires frying will cause the electrical smell.

Best bet is to look for the obvious. Hoses, wires, harness, laying on the engine. Wet spots anywhere for signs of antifreeze leaking. Wires having a burn look to them.
Drive it until it begins making this odor. Open the hood, look for any signs of smoke and try to pinpoint with your nose the area the smell is coming from.
