Hey Fellas... My Main Rear Seal has a slow leak. The dealership said it would run me $1000 to replace since they have to remove the tranny. Does this seem high? I don't have a regular mechanic that I go to, but definitely don't want to drop a grand to fix. What should this cost if I were to take it somewhere else?

Also, what would be the consequences of not getting it fixed? The leak seems to be very slow. Oil is collecting under the truck, but not dripping onto the driveway. I first noticed it about 15k miles ago. Thanks

I don't have the labor time in front of me, and I am sure someone here has access to that. Most shops charge 85 - 95 an hr for labor. You figure with removing a transmission that the labor time is going to be high. Do you have the quote from the dealer??

I'll probably get burned at the stake for even mentioning this, but you could try some Z Max to see if you can put some life back into that seal, make sure the engine is fully warmed up before putting it in then be sure to drive it for 30 min or more.

Leaving now changing my name and address, don't bother looking for me.

Thanks Jerry. I'm gonna call a few shops recommended by some co-workers to see what they charge.

In my area the trans drop including service and TC replacement was $625. This does not include the cost of the TC. maybe take some of the pain away by replacing the TC at the same time.

Great idea.. I like the way you think. That would definitely take some of the sting away

about 10-15 bucks, a case of beer, a buddy, a floor jack, some tools and an afternoon. It's not hard to do, just a lot of steps.

If it's a slow leak, just wait on replacing it until it becomes more apparent.

Dealer.... Eh... Check out B & I Frame & Axle Service they are on Burbank Blvd. They owner drives a 2500. Rates are pretty good and nice to talk to.

Now... I have no idea how to change it out... But I have the Haynes manual floor jacks and stands and most of the tools just a thought...
