"Service Trailer Brake" indicator light

So, right after we changed tires on one of our trailers, we plugged in the connector to the truck and the "Service Trailer Brake" light came on in the dash panel with the little red trailer light below it. It has worked fine, but the message was still there full time.

After taking it to the dealer for the 15,000 service, they said it has NO codes (they have not seen this before, but said Chrylser has). After 2 days, they are telling me they are replacing the trailer brake module to fix the issue.

Has anyone had this happen? We were thinking it might have had something to do with the sensors on the trailer tire/brake system that threw a code when the tires were replaced, but that does not seem to be it.

Happy they are fixing the issue, but wondering what the original problem was. We do a lot of towing and I worry about having "brake" issues. Thankful for the built in exhaust brake though

Mine did the same thing last summer on my first long trip. There was a batch of problem controllers. Any idea when your truck was built? Mine was a late December build.

I think the beg of 2010? Cant remember for sure at the moment. Did yours still work even with the issue? We are not taking any trips with the big trailer, just around town towing a tractor possibly (until they get the new one installed).

No, the trailer brake did not work. Check your drivers door for the date of manufacture.

service trialer brake

there are many things that can cause this. The led display in the itbm ( integrated trailer brake module) will give you a hint about what is causing the fault . If the is a "sb" sometime looks like the number 56. This indicate a short to battery on the brake output . This most of the time is caused by poor grounds on the trailer wiring or water is the trailer tow connecter. If there is more that 1.5 volts on the brake output prior to the the brake going on it will se the SB fault.

If the is a "SC" on the display . this indicates a short circuit fault . Short to ground of some sort or a defective module.

last is "CF" configuration fault . typically wont see this fault unless something in the system is bad . Loss of communication to the ABS module , PCM . It indicate the itbm is not getting messages that it need in order to drive the trailer brake . ie speed data or brake applied communication messages. Look for issues outside of the module . blown fuses of sorted communication line . if you have shorted com line - the itbm will be the least of your problems.
Hope this helps

Thanks for the info. It cant remember what the controller said, I think it was all normal. Dealership ended up looking at it, could not figure out how to fix the issue, and decided the only way to fix it was to replace the controller.

All fixed now

I'm having a different issue with mine. The controller continuously chimes and tells me the trailer brakes are disconnected (in the EVIC) - then it will show connected, and then disconnected, over and over again. I've had the camper checked (brakes, magnets, wiring, etc.) without any problems found. Dealer did find that the plug on the truck was bad and replaced that but it still didn't correct the issue. Anyone have any ideas??

Thanks,

Bob

I bet dollars to donuts its the ground on the trailer. You may be grounding thru the ball and when it doesn't stay connected it does that. I have 17 trailers and my truck did that same thing with one of them and it ended up being the ground wasn't connected correctly and it was grounding off the ball. Thats fine when you are sitting still but it becomes a problem when you are driving.

Thanks - how can I tell if the camper is grounding through the ball? I'm kinda stupid when it comes to those kinds of things....

And if it is grounding through the ball, how should it be grounded?

Thanks,

Bob

Should be grounded thru the wiring harness. Back up to the trailer without hooking on to it and plug in the harness. If the lights work, then the ground is good. If the lights don't work then you have a grounding issue.
