I have a 1996 dodge ram 1500 has a 360ci magnum small block blah blah blah The long and short of it is the current engine has about 420,000 kms on it and while it still runs just fine it will need to be rebuilt soon. I also have the chance the buy a 383 big block dodge for 200-300.00 roughly 1960-70'ish if Im not mistaken witch will need to be rebuilt as well. So what would be the better motor to build out of the two and worth putting the money into rebuilding? I realize going carb'd big block means custom guages have to be wired in and I will lose my cruise control *witch I dont ever use anyways* so what do you guys think?

I have talked to a few people over the course of the day and thought it over and Im pretty sure Im gonna do the 383 big block and a 727 torque flight as I dont mind losing cruise control and any of that. Im gonna do a custom carbon fiber guage inlay and run custom guage setup and run a 5-speed style buckets consel setup with an automatic truck style shifter. That is so far all I have in the way of planning for this build haha.

If I found a 383 for that money I'd buy it. But until then I'm just going to buy and rebuild a 360.

I'm sure there's an adaptor somewhere, but don't ask me where

You can get adaptors to mate the two. Problem is the pcm will be useless if you swap in the 383. The pcm controls the auto tranz to. You didn't say if it is auto or stick. Second is you need to upgrade the tranz to handle the power of the 383. You could use an old 727B (big block) tranz but i don't know if the extension housing will mate up with the newer t-case. Fuel pressure is another issue.

The PCM will be useless, but I have also seen plenty of guys take the 318's and 360's and rip all the electronics out and run em on carb's so that doesnt worry me too much. I have also read another 383 big block swap thread on another forum and he claims to have utilized the pcm for what he needs without ever hooking it up to the motor itself. I also do plan on using the old 727BB transmission and from what Ive heard with a little bit of work and mixing and matching two trannys it is possible to hook it up to my stock t-case? Also at the moment my truck is an automatic truck. So yeh, now if there are flaws in my logic witch there obviously will be this is somthing I have never attempted before feel free to correct me.

you would be better of keeping the 360. better mileage, no trans problems , and better running.

The mileage isnt that great right now anyways, there are plenty of 727 trans swaps on the internet, and a theres no reason why a properly done 383 wouldnt run just as well?

The PCM also has the voltage regulator in it.

I have seen plenty of guys do this swap its not like its impossible over at dakota-durango.com a guy put a 383 big block into a 1997-99 dodge dakota. As well as newer dodge ram powered by a 440 on pavementsucks.com so I know it can be done and done properly. So those trucks are where I got the idea to do this from, I just need to do a little more research on how to do this swap and make it work.

I dont mind going carb'd though that part doesnt bug me, also I dont really wanna use the stock tranny they are prone to too many problems for my liking.

Don't listen to nay-sayers. The 46/47 re/rh trans are great. It's the TC's that are crap. Fix with a better one, and throw in a shift kit, and you'll handle the new motor fine. If you build the new motor, just be sure to build the trans in accordance.

Lots of people talk down on dodge trans, but they are just as good if not stronger than any other trans out there. I'll never run anything else unless. In fact, I'm keeping my 47rh for my drag build, and my re in the purple truck is handling 600hp easy.
