I just had a new tie rod replaced at a new mechanic shop and He charged me $200 for parts and labor for one side. Does this sound right? I'm only asking because i'm gonna need some other parts changed soon and need a mechanic I can trust.

sounds about right if an alignment was done as well. (that can run anywhere from 60-80 alone) then figure on 30 or so for the parts and the rest in labor. But you should have done both. It would probably have been about 300 total. Now if the other one goes you will have to drop 200 again. Make sure to check the boots on your rack and pinion. Alot of times when an alignment is done they get twisted up and if you don't fix it right away they can get torn and then the need to be replaced.

I think it sounds about right also but you could have changed that out yourself you know.

I paid $260 canadian including an alignment. He was originally just supposed to remove my stuck shocks and do an alignment but he called me near the end of the day saying he couldn't get the alignment done properly because of it so i just said do it(i was truckless for 3 days because of the stupid shocks and just wanted her back). I guess it was a good price because i heard he spent quite a bit of time cutting my shocks out which im not sure if he included in the $200, all my buddy said was its gonna cost $200 to replace it so i'm gonna assume it was $200 for the tie rod, labor for tie rod, labor for removal of siezed shocks and alignment. When i went to pick up my truck he took me back and showed me the bad tie rod and his $40k alignment system which was pretty cool, i'm probably gonna use him for anything i cant do myself now(it's so hard finding a good mechanic) There was an article recently in our local paper where they had an undercover investigation on our local mechanics and it was pretty surprising http://www.ctv.ca/generic/WebSpecial...veyresults.pdf

Good deal. It's not a hard job, but it sounds like about an hour of labor plus parts and alignment. I wouldn't have a problem going back to him. The trickier part that I've found is when you get one mechanic that you use regularly, sometimes they start thinking they can take advantage and look at you like a cash cow.

It's sad but true, I was paying $1700 a yr insurance for my truck and after 3 years with no tickets or accidents they send me a renewal letter stating it would be $1900 a yr. I called about 4 places and even the highest was only $1740 and now im only paying $1500 a yr. ****IN Insurance!!!!

Not always, my well used mechanic charged me 300 bucks for Front end steering upgrade, steering stabalizer, 4 ball joints, and 2 U joints installed. Of course I have to pay another 65 for an alignment, but I doubt that other than doing it myself, it could be found cheaper
