Do i "really" need to buy Mopar coolant?

Just wanting to know if i really have to buy Mopar coolant. I was changing out my thermostat and had to put in about 1.5 gallons of coolant so i bought some Prestone 50/50 mix that says "use in all years of all makes and models of vehicles/light trucks" and also you can use it with any color coolant/antifreeze. So if these types of coolants exist then why should i buy Mopar coolant if this Prestone is basically universal coolant? Just wondering because im sure the dealership will be waaaay to high than i want to spend.

I sure hope you didn't put that yellow crap in your radiator? It must be HOAT rated antifreeze.

IAT do in no way meet the requirements for our motors, big no no and you will lose your corrosion protection. Even OAT or Dexcool has been know to gunk up the motor over time. Also never mix antifreeze as it can coagulate giving major issues.

HOAT only unless you want trouble!

Get some Zerex G05 coolant. It's HOAT and works good in these trucks.

G-05 is premixed, no water needed. Says so on the bottle even.

There's a 50/50 premixed bottle and one that's 100% coolant.

If you mixed IAT/OAT/Dexcool with the factory fill you will need to do a full cooling system flush before refilling and buy the 50/50 premix that way you don't have to worry about mixing and you don't have to deal with all the problems with using plain tap water (electrolysis, corrosion, scaling, etc).

I ran Dexcool (GM) in my Camaro (LS series aluminum block and heads) for ten+ years with no problems. The issue with the Dexcool and the HOAT comes into play when you mix different types with them. They can gel up and block the system up as stated. As long as you use 100% of the same type coolant it should be fine. I'd be willing to bet if a full flush was done Dexcool would work just fine in these trucks. I never emptied my system so I topped off with HOAT when I did my radiator replacement.

can i do it this way instead?

Drain radiator. Drain big hose that goes into thermostat? fill radiator with water from hose then drain, do this maybe twice. then fill radiator back up with new 50/50 zerex?

You used this stuff right?

You should be fine. As long as the coolant said it was safe for all vehicles you are good. I have used "all vehicle" formulas in both HOAT( Chrysler ) and Dexcool(GM ) cooling systems and been fine. I haven't used the Prestone one like shown above, in a HOAT system specifically, but it is the same basic concept as universal tranny fluids. IF the mfg says it will work you are fine( or should be ).

Just note that the 50/50 pre mixed stuff is for topping off like you did and not meant to be used for a complete coolant system change over. How you used it is correct and you are good to go IMO. I would not do a flush just because you used the all vehicle formula. That is the whole poiint of it being made now. Just too many different formulas and demands to offer them all individually( you would have a whole isle for just AF ). Better for one that will handle them all.

Quote:
The new Prestone® All Makes All Models Extended Life Antifreeze/Coolant is a patented Organic Acid Technology formula that offers up to five years or 150,000 miles of protection when it is added to any extended life antifreeze/coolant. When added to a vehicle’s current formula, it is designed to provide the properties and change over intervals of that formula, be it one that offers 30,000-miles of protection, 100,000-miles of protection or 150,000-miles of protection.

The new formula has been tested with antifreeze/coolant formulations that are factory installed by major auto and light-duty truck makers. It may be added to the antifreeze/coolant of any make or model automobile or light duty truck on the road, foreign or domestic

The new Prestone® 50/50 Prediluted All Makes All Models Extended Life Antifreeze/Coolant formula should only be used to top off the cooling system. For a flush and fill, motorists should use the full concentrate formula offered by the brand to ensure the right mix of water and antifreeze concentrate.
