Yesterday, 2 days after I bought my 1998 Grand Caravan SE Sport, THE MOTOR BLEW!!! The motor had only 74k on it

I was going up a hill, behind a Tractor trailer, pondering passing it when the oil light came on, the power dropped and the heat went straight up to Hot! It was as if Some one had flipped a switch! I had the A/c on, but not on high, and was only running the front a/c. After 3 1/2 hours on the side of the road, 40 miles outta town. I get it towed back to the dealer. It was the first up this morning on the lift. A bearing went out, jamming the crank shaft which rammed a rod.. into what piston I don't know yet. The dealership has been apologizing all over themselves told me they will drop a new motor in for us at no cost.

I need to ask the experts some questions. What is better, a rebuilt motor, or a new one? If they drop a "new" motor in, do i need to make sure its not a rebuilt one? How long should it take? Are these machines prone to these kinds of breakdowns? I know the older ones were, but what about the newer ones?

What motor did you have ? 3.0 L ? 3.3L ?

If the dealer is going to drop a new motor in it for you, I would suspect that they would choose a rebuilt, because it is cheaper than a new one. At least they are willing to fess up to the damages and willing to make rectify the situation.

if the dealership will do a new motor for free, sounds good.. dropping new motor in whether it is rebuilt or new takes a lot of time, which the dealership is going have to pay for... but a new motor is better than a rebuilt one, there's less wear on the engine... it's pretty cool how they are doing it all for free.. it was my dealership, they'd probably tell me i left the AC on too long and would make me pay for it =P

Well, today i had an option, a different rig or the motor, but they had to drop the motor or not. Decisions, decisions....

Its a 3.3 ltr, and the dealer I'm amazed to say has been outstanding! IN fact just a couple of minutes a go my husband pulled in with a salesman driving a 2002 Grand am (well, it is a GMC PONTIAC HUMMER Dealer.... Hmm.. Hummer would fun...) that I am to use until they get my van running agian!

I wonder.. I wonder if they are being so nice because of the fact that they DIDN'T do their inspection checks of the van before they let us drive it home... It was a trade - in kinda thing..

Just found out, its a factory new motor, that is being crated out here from Detroit... its a full 3.3 ltr new, and i should have the van back by next friday. I will be so thrilled, I HATE that little Grand Am! I hate the way it drives and steers, i hate the feather light peddles on that thing!

I guess i'm just the epitomy of a "pick up girl" as I hate cars!

Have a good one guys!
