New to diesel - oil change interval?

I bought my first diesel last week, a 07 with the 5.9l, and reading the manual it says to change the engine oil every 12K or 15k (I can't remember off hand). Anyway I realize that it holds 200 gal or so of oil, LOL, but this seems very high to me. What are you guys changing at? Thanks

It sure seems like a long interval. I wonder what all the guys that say they have the used oil tested find from the test results. I plan on running rotella t synthetic but even then I would think that changing amybe sooner. Thanks for the info.

Most I talk to do... 5000 to 7500 some with a filter bypass do 25,000k... Amsoils does a test. With the price of fuel heading up and up my plan is to use plain ole 15-40 and doing 7500 on the oil. Waiting for the dealer to have the monthly special sent out new oil n filter plus tire rotate and chassis lube for 60 bucks.

You are from Alberta,.. with our weather, idling,.. engine not getting up to temp,.. I change mine every 4000km. In the summer every 5000km,.. fuel filters every 2nd oil change,.. I don't follow the "schedule B" like in the OP manual. I also run 5W-40 synthetic all year round.

I went into the dealer and got the oil change, tire rotate and lube. 45 bucks with a coupon. They put the label on the window and want me to come in in 3000 miles.

Only reason I went in to the dealer was the cost, cant pass up 45 bucks when i spent 60 at wally world for oil and filter alone.

Cummins Diesel recommends 15k miles for changes. Dodge wants it done every 3k miles.

My local dealership is always offering deals here. Right now I can purchase 4 oil changes for $150 on my diesel. I change it every 5,000 miles and I change the fuel filter every 10,000. I get my fuel and air filters from Geno's Garage cause it is cheaper than the dealer.

5,000 mile oil changes on a 5.9l Cummins is basically throwing money into the pockets of the SAUDI's!!! 12q of oil is why you can go 13-15k on oil changes! Change your oil and fuel FILTERS at 7,500 miles...... If you go synthetic.... Do a Oil Analysis at your 15k mile mark and I bet your are suprised at what the test results will tell you........ A-OK !!!!

** I know it's piece of mind and what not....but you are really wasting oil IMHO......

*** I towed ALLOT with my last 5.9l and ran Shell-Rotella and changed the oil at 6-7k..... BUT I TOWED 99% of the time with her...12 to 14,000 pounds in tow! Oil anylasis will tell you the TRUTH about what your engine is doing...well worth the $$ to get a good baseline on the type of oil you are running!

If you go with AMSOIL or RP...... Changing your filter and topping off with fresh oil will basically keep the additives package up in the oil and you will be able to go even further as long as your engine is in good health!

AMSOIL TANK 2008 White, HEMI, 4X4, 3.92 Gears, Mickey T Classic III's w/FALKEN ATZ's 295/70/17E, Curt Front Hitch, Jason's EXTREME Topper.. Loaded...
