Hi all. I started up my truck today and heard a loud noticeable ticking from under the hood. I drove it home last night and nothing was wrong then. When I opened the hood it just got louder but I can't narrow where it is coming from. When I give it some gas the ticking speeds up with the RPMs. I checked the oil because I thought it might be something internal at first and the oil was a little low. I'm just coming up to the 3000 mile mark now for the oil change. I added to it just to see if the tick would go away but it didn't change anything. I'm just wondering if anybody had any ideas on what it might be or where I should start looking. Thanks in advance. By the way I just toped it off with fuel (89 oct) yesterday to so could it be bad gas? Thanks again.

Sounds like it could be the valves. One could be loose causing a "tick" sound and would be persistent with the rpms.

As stated previously I filled the oil back to full on the dip stick, and let it run for a while and took it out and took it out for a drive. After a while the loud ticking went away, the hemi tick is still there like always. I put some fuelsystem cleaner in it as well. Hpofully it will stay away for good now. Now I just have to figure out why it was a Qt. low on oil in just under 3000 miles.

A few 4.7L owners in the past have said the "tick" was an exhaust leak. They claimed the manifold had come lose and caused the sound you're hearing. They also claimed they put in new exhaust gaskets with better locking nuts on the manifold and everything was like new; no "tick".

There have been others that have said the "tick" was worn rockers. Some have even said they heard the "tick" and later, one of the rockers failed; this of coarse damage the head. And yet others have said they have been told by Dodge tech’s, it’s the timing chain tensioner causing the noise. The timing chain tensioner needs to pump up oil pressure upon startup and that it was a common issue. If you can rule out the exhaust like mentioned above you may want to consider changing to lighter weight oil for the winter and better oil filter as well. Some have always run m1 5W30 syn-oil and have experienced the tapping noise. They changed out to M1 0w30 synthetic-oil with the M1 oil filter and it has reduced the tapping quite a bit. I personally do not like running the low weight oil in my truck. One thing is for sure; you need to make sure to let the engine warm up a couple of extra minutes until that tapping stops before driving away.

My truck had 26-miles on it when I drove it off the lot. The engine was quite as a church mouse. Around 75K, I replaced everything from the head gaskets up when I had the big valve cylinder heads and cams to on the engine. Now the engine has the "tick”.

exhaust manifold leak, my guess is there is a broken manifold or header bolt

My 4.7 tick until it warns up (2 minutes tops) is this sludge in the engine blocking the oiling until it warms, or could this be the manifold? I'd think it'd keep ticking?!

I was using 5w20 oil. I was suprised to see it burned through a quart in 3000 miles. I added a Qt and ran it for a while than the ticking stoped, now I just have the regular hemi tick ( which is alot quiter compaired to the tick I had.) I thought it may have needed to warm up for a while to but I have an automatic starter and let it warm up for a couple minutes before i leave the house so that wasnt the issue either. Atleast its gone now!

My 5.7l Hemi in my Durango has a broken exhaust manifold bolt as well...
