Hemi's built tough? No way. My truck stalled making a left hand turn at zero RPM's and that was the end of my 5.7 Hemi. All the instrument panel guages were reading well, no issues, then bingo. I could not keep the truck running in idle. I have 122,000 miles on this engine and change the oil and all the right stuff, Right?
Anyway, a broken spring was the result and the valve dropped into the head and now I am looking at a rebuild or a new crate motor. I don't think this comes under general maintenace.
So now I either rebuild, buy new crate motor and install at a minimum price of $3000.

Is this tied to the infamous hemi tick? Did you truck have the hemi tick? I am just wondering if this is the conclusion of the effects that cause the tick.

122k miles sure isn't much...

If it happened to me, I would just get an entire long block and rebuild it with the best parts I could. A $3-4k shot isn't much when considering a standard truck payment is what, $350 or more a month?

My Hemi D has 67k on it. I am strongly considering a preemptive head rebuild to avoid any valvetrain problems down the road.

Yes, There was a tick at one time but I changed to a 5w-40w oil and had no problems whatsoever. I was told that it is a good idea to change the springs as they are the culprit of faulty poor qualtiy grade. If I had known that, I am sure I would have spent the money to avoid this issue.

I recall some of the early 5.7's had valvetrain issues. Not sure if that was the '04's or not. Sorry to hear it happened. I have not heard of many 5.7's with this problem. I guess you were just unlucky.

$3K is awful low. My former neighbor spent $2800 to rebuild a Ford motor (forget which size) over 10 years ago. I would think a new motor installed today would be much higher.

Even $5K for a new motor is worth it. If it were me I'd put the new motor in and then trade/sell it. The truck's not worth much without a working engine. Friend of mine had the transmission in his '03 F150 fail at 93K miles. He ended up replacing the transmission ($3300), bought a new 2010 F250 and then sold the F150 for $9K. The dealer wouldn't give him anything worthwhile for the truck with a blown transmission.

Wow that sucks. I doubt it's common though or we'd be getting many such stories here.
I'm nearing 100K and hope this don't happen.

rammingit, it stinks that it happened.

I think with machines it's just a chance thing. I've had vehicles I've abused and not taken care of and they just kept on going. And I've had cars I really liked and took good care of and had tons of problems with them.

I feel your pain, but I think it was just an unfortunate incident and not something that's really common in these engines.

Your truck looks really nice in the pic and with a new or rebuilt motor I'm sure you could sell it and get your money out of it, or drive it another 100k.

Yes I know the prices are unmanageable but I lost my job after 30 years and any real cost of living adjustment like this is just another set back which you never really think it could happen. The good news is that the truck is paid for.

I look at this issue like this. Will I ever be able to take this vehicle any distance away from home? Well Guys I will keep you posted on the cost. I do have a connection for a new crate motor and will find out the price of the engine tomorrow.

I think a 94-98 12 Valve Cummins and built 47RH would look great between those fenders.

I promise you, the valve spring won't fall into the cylinder on it.

As for your poll question, I feel great driving mine. Last year did a 1,200 mile trip, ran flawlessly. This weekend, did a 700 mile round trip, averaged 23.6 mpg on the highway.

The 2500's with the solid front axle, the Cummins Turbo Diesel and 6 speed auto are amazing on the highway. Rode like a dream.

Honestly, my [older] cars/trucks are all paid off so I haven't been to a dealer since around 2005... That is crazy!!! $500/month is no small payment.

Lets get real here about payments. Traded in an 04' 2500 QC Hemi/auto w/4.10's w 24,000 miles on our 08 Power Wagon. It stickered north of 47k. I got a $4500 rebate, $18,500 for the 04, I owed $10,000 on it. So the $4500 & $8,500 went towards the Power Wagon, for 66 months & payments are $595 a month. If I was to put nothing down, my payments would have been over $800 a month. Try pricing a F-450 CCab Dually loaded. $64,000 in 08'. With no money down, you are probably looking at $1200-$1400 or more for 7 years.

Sucks that your valve spring broke & destroyed the engine. But truck looks in great shape. I would rebuild it & the trans. Then, at your convienience, replace the wear items before they leave you stranded. Pretty soon, you'll have a basically new truck---for a LOT less than a new one.

I haven't had any problems yet with my new truck, but my old Silverado was a great truck too; but I had to replace 2 water pumps, tons of batteries, transmission and 2 starters. I still wish I had that truck today in this economy because it was paid for and ran like a top after all the repairs that I did to it, plus I didn't have this $460 a month truck payment. Oh well, you live and you learn.

a few months ago with had a friend who broke a valve spring (it was aftermarket)...we tried like heck to start it an keep it running (not knowing it was spring)... we ended up installing 6.1 springs an lucky enough, no piston/head damage whatsoever... and as we were changing the springs out we actually found 3 springs busted. so his cost was only for gettin new springs...we were lucky..

Chef I am going to look at the engine today and see if there is another avenue or these guys are right and the engine is done. I get prices today.

I hate to say it like this but we all know no engine lives and runs forever. Some go out quietly and some go out with a bang.

I drove mine down to Miami and back last year and never an issue. I feel good and safe about it but that doesnt mean next week something might not go wrong.

I would also look on CL for another engine as you can fond some good/cheap ones on there from time to time.
