Need transmission advice... Truck wont shift from 2nd to 3rd... And I suck at this

Ok... Im pretty handy, but if I have a weak point its definitely transmission work. I can remove and install them, and do clutches etc, but I know little about their internals. So bear with me.

Problem Im having is this:

Truck runs fine and moves, but will not shift from 2nd to third gear unless I rev the engine to 4k rpm or so, at which point it shifts and acts normally, but as soon as it downshifts again I cannot get it to upshift unless I rev it up again.

Now Ive searched around and come up with a few possible solutions:

- clogged up valve body, or broken off bolt on the valve body
- needs a fluid change to flush any bad fluid out
- new tranny time

I really dont have the money for a tranny rebuild right now, so any advice would be appreciated, and any links to a write up on doing the valve body would be appreciated. Thanks a ton guys

Start with the simple stuff first: tranny flush and filter, PCM reset, etc... Good luck!!!

I did a filter change on a friends Ram a number of years ago. The filter was dirty and the magnets had alot of debri on them (the ones they put in the pan)

As soon as the filter/fluid change and the magnets were cleaned off (as well as you can clean a magnet off with microscopic metal shavings clinging to it) they reported much smoother shifting. Since it was a service interval and I went by the book (they were 10k over the 50k service) the worst part was scraping the old gasket off.

In your caes there may be more going on, but this would be a good place to start, as dropping the pan can give you a good idea of how things are.

Good luck

You have the 46RE I believe, or else its the 47RE. Either way I'd start with new fluid and take a good look at the old to see if its burnt. It could be something as simple as a solenoid but you won't really know until you bring it somewhere- which is what I'd do if I were you. Go to a good tranny shop and have them check it out.

I have a strong aversion to paying anyone to do something I can do myself, but in this case i might pay them to diagnose it at least. Seems like if this is the problem it would be simple enough, and a fluid change might even solve the problem.

You can change the solenoid yourself, may take a bit to find one, but you could do it.
