Hey y'all. As the old saying goes, "when it rains, it pours". Think my transmission in my '94 1500 5.2 4x4 just kicked the bucket. I've only had the truck about a month, so don't know much about it. On my way home today after about a 20 min. drive my automatic trans started making a whirring noise that steadily got worse until when driving down my streets (many stop signs) the truck started free revving (RPM's but no motion) and wouldn't drive. It still has reverse, but none of the forward gears work. Please help!!!

I've been searching the net for a master rebuild kit-think that's what I need? Do you know of any good parts suppliers who will carry it? Will I also need a bunch of specialty tools? Thanks

Spoke with a mechanic friend of mine-he suggested the whirring noise may be a toasted sun gear(see original post). Are there some things I can do to test possible causes BEFORE I pull the trans out? Band adjustments? I'm new to auto trannies so any input is greatly appreciated!

Elliot, how much did it total out to? I've already sunk some major $$$ into this thing and am not sure abaout putting much more money into it. I like the truck despite what's gone wrong, but am thinking about cutting my losses.
Cheers

Well like I said mine had no forward gears and acted like it was in neutral when you put in gear but you could tell it was in gear just no forward movement. It went backwards just fine though. I have a 47RE and had it built heavy duty for towing cost 1600.00 I have scene rebuilt ones with warranty on e-bay for 1000.00

Fluid looked okay, even too good, like it was just changed to cover something up. Smelled fine too-not burned, but the level was actually high on the dipstick, and I made sure to run it through all gear selections and check in neutral. I personally think the a*swipe I bought it from put trans medic or something in there to cover up an issue and that's why the level is high, but the world will never know now...

Nothing like dishonest sellers. Despite all this I really do like the truck, but at this point, I don't know whether I'm keeping it or not-I have it up for sale and I'm going to see what offers I get. If someone offers enough cash, I'm offin it. And hopefully, better luck next time.

A press, good external circlip pliers, T-25 torx driver is about all you need in the way of special tools. Feeler gauges and hand tools are aso needed.

Terry can set you up or Wayne at APS Precision can also set you up. Another good guy in Dodge transmissions is Martin Saine though I have not dealt with him personally, I hear nothing but good about him.

You've definitely got a fried transmission, will require a rebuild. Mine went but it had no reverse, though I had forward gears lol. Mine was a band/drum/servo that failed. I bought a Level10 rebuild kit and a few extra parts that the kit didnt include. I already had a trans-go shift kit and Long LPD 28000 GVW cooler on it.
