oil smells like gas?

Hey guys I have an 88 d250 with a 2 barrel 360. It's freshly rebuilt with a new holley rebuild. Was having starting issues and finally got the carb dialed in. Changed the oil after because it was running rich. It sat for a week before I started it again so I checked and the oil smells like it has gas in it again any ideas?

Reply just put a new set in right after i changed the oil, turned in the idle mixture screws a whole turn to try and lean down the mixture. Haven't checked the plugs because they haven't had much run time yet.

check that plug, see how it is running.. if it is a little lean, like you want it... then drain out that oil, let the pan drain till it is as close to 100% dry as you can and do new oil and filter again.. run the engine for a minute or two and check the oil to see if it stil smell's.. i think there was a little of the old gassy oil left in the engine, wich mixed with your new oil and spooled it.. that gas in the oil will kill your barrings so get it outa there....

A bad fuel pump can some times leak gas into the oil.

Operate the pump by hand with with a piece of line into a container of gas.
If it is what I'm thinking it will spurt out the opening where the lever is that operates off the camshaft.
