2004 Ram 1500 4x4 Multiple cylinder misfire.

I have a 2004 Ram 1500 4x4 5.7L. I was driving and the engine started cutting out real bad. It will not idle at all. You have to keep the throttle 1/2 pressed to keep it running. I have had some different codes. Orig. I was getting a multiple cylinder misfire. cylinders 1,2 and 3. I replaces coil on #1 cylinder. Did not seem to help. It tripped a new code last night. P2323 Ignition coil #8 secondary circuit/insufficiant ionization. It kiked out the same code for Cylinder #6,5 and 1 also. Total of four cylinders. I was told by a mechanic that I needed to replace the coils on those four cylinders. The problem I have is that Cylinder #1 has a new coil on it. Could these codes be related to the secondary spark plug? I am about at my witts end with this thing. Does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks!!

How many miles are on the engine/spark plugs? What kind of spark plugs are you using?

Coils don't usually go bad in multiples like you have. I would check the plugs first, for good maintenance at least, but it sounds like you may have a wiring problem. all the coils share 1 wire, you will notice if you check a coil connector, all have a common coloured wire. It is possible that there is a bad spot in the wiring somewhere.

I have 86,000 miles on it. I put new champion spark plugs in it which I purchased from the Dodge dealer. Tonight I replace the coils on Cylinders 6,8 and 5. That makes a total of four coils that I have replaced. I had already put a new one on Cylinder 1. That did not make any difference. I was going to pick up a set of Plug wires tomorrow and try that. I will look into the common wire. I t looks like it will be hard to trace since they are all wrapped up. Thanks for the info. If you think of anything else I am open to any sugestions. It has been down for a month now. I am getting quite discouraged.

The Champions are the problem. I wouldnt use them in anything. I had a buddy that had one explode on him while he was driving by my house. Sounded like a shot gun going off. Swap the plugs for a set of NGK's or Nippion. That would be alot cheaper than one coil.

The champions aren't the problem, thats whats in the truck from factory and one plug exploding doesn't make them a problem, especially when there are millions on the road with no problem. get a wiring diagram and check your wiring. it is possible that the pcm is the problem as well.

Id love to hear how a plug explodes.

And as was said before, Champs come stock and Im riding on them now.

Here is something good to hear though. When I did my 5.7 to 6.1 conversion, all I did was replace the VCs, put the coil packs on top and wire them up. For those that dont know, there are only two wires. However, this kit was BNIB and after all was said and done with, every so often I will get those same codes on cyl 1-3-5. Now I never got a code before so IM SURE its NOT my PCM. However, this kit was BNIB. My plugs were replaced just a few thousand miles back.

So anyone care to explain this? It never misses. I run it hard and it never sputters. You want my opinion? Go check the plug connections on the coils and make sure they are good. Pull the coil pack and reseat it on the plug tips. I havent gotten a chance to get into mine yet but what else could it be right? Everything on mine is all brand new.

I am looking for a PCM. Are these all the same for the 5.7L or does it have to be the exact same options as my truck? I had someone tell me today to check for a leak in the intake gasket. Could a intake gasket cause it to run ths bad?

the PCM is not the same for all 5.7 make sure you get the same part#
a leak in the intake will cause it to run bad but not all does misfires

I would say no. I dont think it has to do with the PCM or else it would be on all cyl and not just 2 or 3

OK, I have replaced the plug wires. I did not expect it to work but with 85,000 miles it could not hurt. Today I received a different PCM. Yes the part number is exactly the same. It did not fix it. I am still open to any suggestions. Please help!!!!! I do not know what else to do. I have looked for a bare wire but have not found anything yet.

I never thought it was the PCM anyway. I hope it wasnt costly. Make sure you read my post 9 and you will see why I didnt think it was the PCM. Anyay, since you are having cyl 6-5-1 throwing those codes, take those coils out and swap them on different cylinders (ex. 2-3-4) and clear the codes. Then go drive it a while and see if the codes come back and what cyl they are on. Will it be 6-5-1 or 2-3-4?

See what Im saying?

Have you checked your PCM grounds for good continuity/low resistance?

All I can think of is the crank position sensor or timing gear.
Also check the harness on the right side that rests on top of the Valve covers, it rubs quite a bit there

this week a friend's truck all of a sudden started to run bad and he also couldn't keep it idling with out him holdin the gas peddle down...threw the p0300 multiple misfire also...when I arrived we started re-setting everything (battery, pcm, tuner) and still ran bad an couldn't hold idle. I could hear some clacking in the passenger valve train and decided to pull the valve cover. We found the #3 exhaust spring broken....
