How hard is to replace the water pump on a 1997 Dodge Ram Pick Up? It has the 5.9 V-8 with A/C. I have done it before on the 318 from the 70's. Does the A/C compressor have to be moved on this year? Is it about the same amount of work?

Yes, the AC compressor has to be moved, but it is a fairly easy job. Everything down to the water pump had to come off when I did the intake plenum, and it was less than an hour worth of work to get down to the front of the water pump. While you're in there, make sure you replace the bypass hose. Everything has to come back off if that splits.

the a/c does have to come off if you change the by pass hose which i would recommend doing while you have the water pump off

Wait, let's clarify, the A/C does NOT need to come off, it can be moved to the side gently. DO NOT remove your A/C, just move it over. I know how literal some people can be. The entire job is really easy. I replaced my pump a few years back and it was no big deal. The biggest amount of work is just getting the bracket and all the parts off (or moved out of the way). It's a couple of hours work if you take your time and have a few beers.

I have changed mine in about 30 minutes, nothing needs to be removed other than the fan & shroud.
It's not like the LA setup, where everything is attached to the water pump. The pump will come off without removing any of the accessories.
A good excuse to switch over to e-fans is plenty of room to work

An E-fan would be a nice mod, but they are kinda pricey. Probably makes the A/C work better too.

My redneck-delux setup was about $200. Not as fancy as the all in one kits, but works good.
And yes, the A/C works great even at idle.

The 4rth gens now come with Efans. I wonder if that set up could just be swapped over to ours? If so, that would be a great set up to get cheap at a Junk Yard, when they wind up there. Wont be too long, the way most people drive. I know this is a V6 but it may work just fine for a V8.

you'd be surprised how much people are charging for those at salvage yards.
I sourced a fan from a Taurus V6 (similar to the one pictured above) and he wanted $80. Shit, I can buy a new fan for that.

Only problem with the above is there isn't an easy way to fabricate brackets for the overflow and windshield washer fluid tank.
With the universal aluminum shroud I bought from summit, i just cut tabs & used bolts to hang them near the stock location.
I have heard of people butchering the stock shroud to accomplish the same thing.

The wife's Durango has both, main clutch fan is belt driven and the secondary fan for the A/C & tranny cooler is electric. Don't know if that's standard equipment or an add-on with the severe duty towing package.

Yea, that is a stock set up for Durangos. Kinda funky set up, but I remember reading on another forum a guy with a Durango having an over heating issue and not knowing which fan was the cause.

That is really expensive a salvage yard charging that much. They have figured out how many people are holding on to older cars and want to stick it to ya. I agree with you that I would get the shroud from Summit and not destroy my OEM.

You know on the 4rth gen Rams I found out looking at online pics that the grill is stationary. So if you need to do some work on the front end, there is more tear down. I like the way out grill lifts out of the way, easy access.
