Whining noise while driving.

I own a 2004 Dodge Ram 4.7 QC, the truck has a little over 50k miles on the engine. Anyways anytime I start to drive I hear this whining noise kinda like the power steering however if I park the truck and turn the wheel I don't hear it at all. I took it to the dealership once about it but they said they didn't find anything wrong with it and that is normal however I don't think it is since I drove other trucks like mine (I work as valet) and I don't hear that same noise. Any ideas? By the way the truck drives fine other than that noise.

does it do under accelration, under decelrartion, cruising, certain gear, what are the conditions when you hear the noise?

I'd check everything that's hook-up to the belt but the belt tensioner or the alternator would be your best bet with that type of noise.

I used to get this terrible whining sound whilst driving all the time, but since my divorce it stopped.

If it sounds like the power steering, you might want to try stopping the truck, turning to full lock on the wheel and creeping to see if the noise is there also.

Also, back when I worked at a dealership, I heard something similar from a 4x4 Ram and it was coming from the 4x4 transfer case.

Does the pitch change with speed or engine rpm?

Russ.

it happens the moment you put the truck in drive and start to go. Doesn't matter what gear your in. I never tried to hear it while I go in reverse but I can always hear it when I am in drive.

Put the truck on level ground and check the ATF in the transmission. Follow the instructions that are on the side of the transmission dip-stick. While you’re checking the level make note of the color and smell of the ATF. You said the truck has 50K; was the AFT changed at 30K?

Remove your serpentine belt. Then drive your truck. If the noise goes away. The problem is one of the accessories. If noise is still present. The transmission or engine/ driveline is causing the noise. Word of caution do not overheat the engine when doing this. You will have about 60 seconds of drive time with no belt. I had a whine noise at idle/low speeds. I thought for sure it was a power steering pump. Turned out to be the A/C compressor clutch bearing.
Good Luck.

Front wheel bearing or rear differential. Sounds like the rear diff gear or pinion making noise.

this really does suck

i have a 99 ram and mine is doing the whining too, the t case is getting hot and the noise is coming from the t case for sure, i jacked the truck up and ran it, had my ear up against the rear and it was fine, and its not the trans cuz the sound does not change with the gears... when i was looking it up on line it looks like something in those sun gears in the front are going, the reason im saying this is because most of the heat is coming from the front of the t case

I'm getting a whine as well but only when the engine is under load. Idle, coasting, and deaccelerating it is fine but as soon as I touch the throttle I can hear it and it seems to increase with speed and not rpm...?? From the drivers seat it sounds like it's coming form the front right side of the truck.
