I have a 1999 dodge 2500 diesel. When I first got in last year it was having shifting problems going back and forth between 3rd and 4th. This fourm helped me out to find out the problem was a bad battery. I replaced both batteries last jul then. Now it is having similar problem shifting. It will still do the 3rd to 4th jump but now it just seems like the shift points are a little off every once in a while. sometimes it revs up higher then normal before it shifts and sometimes it shifts harder then normal into a gear and other times it is normal. But now it also does this thing that I will start it up and go to drive it and it will be stuck in first gear (I am guessing some kind of a safe mode). I shut it off and disconnect the battery for a min and it resets everything and then it starts shifting fine. Then sometimes when I shut it off and go to start it back up it will do the getting stuck in first gear thing again. It only ever does that when I first start it up never gets stuck in first once I start driving. I have not check the batteries yet but I am guessing they would still be good being there NAPA battereis and less then a year old. I was thinking trying to get new battery cables put on as mine are a bit rusted and such. Has anyone every had this problem before?

plug in and see if the computor has any codes thrown for a starter, sounds like it might possibly be the trans over voltage deal.

I had problems on my 01 where it would shift back and forth between 3-4 at certain speeds and throttle positions and someone here pointed me towards a TSB for regrounding a wire near the engine. Have you ever heard of something like this. Not sure if it is the same problem but thought I would mention it.

That's very thorough and helpful budnate. However that is more complictaed than what I did. Someone on this board gave me the directions. I can try to find them if you need them burton9010 or hopefully someone else can post a link. All I did was locate a ground wire to the (I believe) TPS sensor. Cut the wire and splice on two new wires and run them to the battery negative.

There is a TSB and a computer flash from Dodge to help this.I know alot of guys down here who have had this done over the years and it fixed the problem. You may want to check with Dodge on having this done before doing any home brewed wiring changes.
