Question Need help with transfer case linkage repair

Please help. I have completely lost my 4W shifter link-rod for my transfer case shifting, as in fell out and disappeared. I bought a new rod from Dodge, but I am having a problem mounting it. The mounting holes are rather large compared to the rod link points...like it requires bushings. What bushings do I use to secure the linkage to the shift lever and to the transfer case lever?? The dealer parts person told me they discontinued selling what was shown, and not very clearly, on the illustrated parts breakdown diagram. I am assuming these are some plastic bushing of some sort that, in my case, deteriorated to cause my linkage to come apart. Since I have never seen the setup, I do not know what I am looking for and hate to take it to the dealer and spend labor bucks for such a simple thing. I searched these forums but did not find anything on the subject. Am I the only one this has happened to, losing the whole linkage?? Please tell me what I need and where to get it. Thanks

Not sure if this helps, but here are all the parts relating to the transfer case shift lever from my 04 parts catalog. I checked and the 03 catalog looks the same. What year is your truck BTW?

Question Need help with transfer case linkage repair

The truck is an '02.

Thanks, but that is the diagram which does not show the clip or bushing that is required to secure the linkage to the shift levers.

I guess I really need someone to look under their truck and report what they find or a mechanic that is familiar with this.

Thanks

But if it is not listed in the parts catalog - how are you going to buy one if one were to exist?

Question Need help with transfer case linkage repair

Thanks Hemi1569. Just as I thought, I need some kind of bushing. The fact that Dodge does not show this as a part in their catalog (attached in thread), leads me to believe that it might be somewhat of a common part?? Maybe this part is shown on the transfer case IPB diagram? The search continues. Hopefully, someone with some experience will see this thread. All help appreciated.

I just had this problem occur to me. Going down the highway something started banging against the firewall or floor boards then stopped. As I was driving, I noticed my 4x4 shifter was laid all the way back in 4W High. After I got home, I found that the shifter glided easily forward / backward leading me to believe the linkage had come undone. I was lucky as the linkage was still connected to the shifter but not the transfer case. The loose linkage was hitting the drive shaft going to the front differencial which is what made the noise to begin with. On both ends of the linkage appears to be a rubber (not plastic) grommets. Mine are rotten, one almost completely gone. I removed the linkage until I can get the parts needed to repair it, for fear of loosing like you did. The grommet looks like a thick black "O" ring used for passing wires through sheetmetal. Looks like something we may be able to get from any hardware store, but the linkage looks like it was suppose to have a clip to hold the rod in the grommet. The diagram shown earlier did not show enough detail to know for sure. Please let me know if you learn more, hope this was of some help.
