Question on changing sparkplugs on Hemi

Fellas,

In changing the plugs, after you replace the plug and hand tighten it in the cyclinder.. about how much do you ratchet tighten it.. 1/4 to 1/2 turn.. I don't have access to a torque wrench so trying to gauge about how much to tighten with ratchet once it is hand tightened. Any info from those who have done it numerous times with your best estimate is appreciated..

Cheers

There is all sorts of "do this do that" when changing plugs.
I always put a bit of anti-sieze on these plugs and nip them, so they are hand tight with no tools. I then go a 1/4 turn, using the ratchet.
Never been a problem for me.

Same here, the key is to use a 1/4 drive ratchet to install. There is no room for a torque wrench in there. I did the wife's jeep a couple months ago.

Yes, good point Josh Brown. Keep your tools small so you can't get much leverage to stip or overtighten threads etc.

Yeah but what we're saying, is that really necessary??
Don't get me wrong, torquing is a good thing and I wished I'd have done it at times ha ha ha.

The manual says 12-14 ft/lbs. Finger-tight and a 1/4 turn is probably 'bout right. Remember, you're going into aluminum.

Does anyone have any special methods?...I see that the plugs adjacent to the brake booster do not offer much working room and could be a challenge as well as the back ones... I just got myself familiar and thought I'd take a look at the condition of the current plugs before I set aside a few hours to do this and so I took out the one in the front to see how the current plugs looked.. much to my surprise.. and for 65,000 miles the plugs look normal.. guess them stock champion plugs are really good. I did have a little issue with the extender socket not always staying on the sparkplug socket as I was removing the plugs from that long ass cylinder... finally just unscrewed it by hand with the extender and sparkplug socket and it came out.

i found that it makes the job very easy if you jack up the front and take the wheel and wheel well liner off.

I "got my eye in", by changing out a few of the easier plugs in the front of the engine. Then while I was still fresh, I went and replaced all the most difficult plugs in the back and worked my way forward.
This meant I wasn't making forced errors, due to being tired stressed out and down right grouchy lol.

Excellent advice, not only for spark plug replacement, but for life in general.

I call it "working downhill". On any project, do the hardest stuff first.
It just gets easier as you go, which is good because you're gonna get fatigued/cranky as the work progresses.

A 1/4" drive inch/lb torque wrench will fit in pretty tight places. They can be had for less than $20 so it's a good addition to any tool box.
With aluminum heads just as big of problem as over torquing is cross threading. THe trick I use is to cut a 2 inch piece of fuel hose, then stick the plug in the hole of the hose to start the plug. It fits just the right tightness. If you're cross threaded the plug will spin in the hose before you do damage. Good trick in tight places.
A touch of anti-seize on the start of the threads is always good advice when going into alloy heads.
