A buddy of mine has a 2001 1/2 ton Dodge Ram Sport 4x4 with a 5.9 engine and auto. trans. The rear in the truck is bad and we are trying to find a replacement. We need to know what years will interchange for the rear?

The pinion sheared off with the yoke still hooked to the driveshaft. With the cost of having it rebuilt and the labor, I think it will be cheaper to find another rear and then we will install it.

the only problem with that is what you get could be questionable if you rebuild it you know what you have also you could beef it up while your there just a suggestion of course

Yeah, as long as it's got abs, and you keep the 3.55's in the 9.25 rearend, it should swap out anyways, just make sure to keep the same gears so as not to counter the front end.

2002 was when the 1500's changed over to the new body style trucks with 4 wheel discs. And I believe 2000 was when they put twin piston calipers up front. which is what mine has.

Actually 2001 was sort of the first year for rear disks, but it wasn't the full year. The 2000 model year was ended early because Dodge didn't have any CAFE credits and were facing stiff EPA fines. So they ended the 2000 model year at the end of December 1999. Starting in January 2000, all Rams built were labeled as 2001s and still had rear drums brakes. Then starting in July 2000, when the model year retool would have normally happened, the Ram got a rear disk upgrade. While still sold as 2001, some online forums refer to them as 2001.5

Also, my 2000 has twin piston up front.

My truck was built in October of 2000, and it has drums in the rear.
