Hey guys, haven't been around much lately. Anyways, got a problem with my 2001 cummins. Figured I'd post here since I don't think its a diesel specific problem. I was on the highway today and started to smell something burning, when I got home I popped the hood and I could see what looked like a little smoke or steam coming off the alternator and thats where the burning smell was coming from. I'm guessing the alternator is shot? I probably shouldn't drive it at all like this should I? I don't want the dang thing to catch on fire. I'm thinking about just buying a cheap used one on the truck and be done with it. I don't want to spend $180 on a reman only to find out thats not the prob.

Pull the belt and spin it by hand . If it don't feel like silk , its the bushings . Next , grab a dvm and check the output (running) . If its below 13 , some epoxy on the windings may have melted away . Good luck

well i took the belt off and spun it. It spins smoothly but takes a little more effort than it should I think but i have nothing to compare it to. I spun the ac clutch and that spins way easier than the alternator did. You have to put your hand on the alternator and turn it like a knob whereas the a/c clutch i could roll a finger down and make it spin. what'dya think?

There shoul be noresistance at all . Your bushings have overheated and warped . Time for a new alternator
